Two Under 2

Question about diaper pail, changing pad..

So our 2U2 will be about 22 mos apart and will have separate rooms. DS is 18 mos now and we still very much use his changing pad and diaper genie. We are starting to buy stuff for new baby and I am not sure whether to buy a 2nd pad and genie for DS2's room or if DS1 will be done with being changed up on the changing pad by then? And if so, and we change him wherever, I'm assuming we wouldn't use his diaper genie either? I guess I'm asking when this change happens and what other people did? Thanks!

EDIT: thought I should also mention we are moving DS's playroom to basement where we will also have a living room and bathroom. We are in process of finishing it all now. We will probably spend majority of days down there so I'm thinking we could maybe move DS's diaper pail and changing pad into DS2's room, but still buy a 2nd diaper pail for playroom area and just change both on the floor while we are down there?

Re: Question about diaper pail, changing pad..

  • My 2 kids are 18months apart.  Their bedrooms are next to each other, so we moved the diaper genie into the hallway between their rooms.  We left the changing table in the nursery, and DD just gets her diaper changed on her bed, if she wakes up at night (which is rare).  We did get a 2nd diaper pail for downstairs since we spend most of the day down there.  I just used the changing pad from my diaper bag, and lay it ontop of an ottoman.

  • My two youngest will be 18 months apart when the new one arrives.  I'm not getting a new pail, as we don't use it currently with our 16 month old.  His diapers are too stinky to keep, even in a pail, so we just take them straight to the trash or empty the trash can at the end of the day.  Not getting a new changing pad either, like the PP.
  • My 2 are 13.5 months apart. We have them in separate rooms as well. We ended up getting 2 changing pads but in hindsight I do regret it. We used my DDs until 18 months or so, and my DS we used for the 1st few weeks when he was waking to eat all the time. Within a few months we weren't using either because most of the changing happened in the living room. We haven't used our changing pads in well over a year at this point. Wasted money for us.

As for the diaper pail, we have always just had 1 in the kitchen next to our garbage can. It's worked well for us. If we happened to change one kid upstairs we just brought the diaper down, but the majority of changing occurred downstairs. We did buy a cheapo garbage pail for my DS's room for those 1st few weeks as a newborn, but like the changing pad we haven't used it in months.

Id suggest not buying anything and seeing what you end up needing after your 2nd is born. I wish I had done that for quite a few purchases.

Thanks so much I think this is what I am leaning towards!

Never thought of this. Maybe we will move DS1's diaper pail to the kitchen and then wherever we change him we can just throw it in there.. Also for DS2 I can put the changing pad either in his nursery or in a more common area between the 2 rooms like the 1st pp suggested, and just being the diaper to the pail next to the kitchen trash..

    Thanks so much ladies!

  • Our's will be 22m apart and have their own rooms. We are getting a 2nd diaper pail and changing pad. The new baby will get the changing table and we will just put the pad on DD's dresser. We have the one diaper pail downstairs right now so we will keep the other upstairs.

  • Mine will be 21 months apart.  I'm getting an extra changing pad to put on the dresser in the new nursery; its fairly inexpensive and don't want to risk/worry about waking one up if I need to change the other.  I'll only buy 1 new cover, and rotate the 3 I'll then own between the 2 rooms as needed.

The Diaper genie I will move to the shared bathroom between their 2 bedrooms.

  • I see a few of you are planning to keep a changing pad on top of dresser.. At what age do kids become too big to be changed up there? Or is it different for all?

Ill probably hold off on buying a 2nd changing pad but if DS is still using it by the time DS2 comes maybe ill just buy an extra one.
