Terrified (unreasonable I know)

DD is one year today.  She eats puffs and yogurt melts and occasionally a large piece of fruit to gnaw on, but mainly bm and purees.  I really want to try more "real food" but am terrified she will choke!!

Help? What worked for you all?

  • I worry too, but you have to let them explore new foods. I give DD small pasta, avacodo, steamed carrots and beans, banana, and puffs. Basically, non-choke stuff.

I also give her chicken, turkey, apples, clementines, cheese, and crackers. With those, I make sure the pieces are about the size of my pinkie nail. DD chews well, so that helps too.

Just keep a close eye. Like PP said, coughing and gagging are normal and not signs of choking. Choking makes no sound.

  • I've always been paranoid about choking. I've gotten better this time around. DD refused any and all purees and went almost right to finger foods, much to my dismay. My family always makes fun of me for the minut pieces of food I give my kids as babies. But it's probably no coincidence that my kids have excellent eye hand coordination...their survival depends on it. :)

All joking aside, DD does great with peas (I still squish out of the skin but probably don't need to), black beans (broken in half), shredded cheese, pieces of soft pear or avocado, steamed or roasted vegetables: carrots, squash, sweet potatoes, etc. Small pasta, toast, scrambled egg yolk. She loves berries that are cut up small. Raspberries are great because they kind of break apart easily.

Now DD eats whatever we eat, I just keep it small and manageable to where we're both comfortable. If she gags and I can tell it's just gagging, I try not to make a big deal or give it any attention. I made that mistake with DS because it would scare the crap out of me and he would start doing it to get attention as if we were playing a game...no fun.

Good luck! I think the best way to start is just to jump in and then get more daring as you get more comfortable.
