Warning to long flight takers

I flew from Houston, TX to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 12/24. I don't know how to post the picture of my feet I took while on stopover en route. They became tree stumps. Elephant feet. Cankles x 100. I am now on a hunt for compression hose/ socks while on this small island for my trip back to US on the 8th. I did all the right things in flight drank TONS of water, walked around every 1.5 hrs, did mini exercises. I'm crossing my fingers compression hose will work, if found , however, I'm afraid to admit that when 28wks preg, flights with 10 hr legs are a no no. On a pleasant note, baby boy seemed to be having fun in there. Or maybe just trying to find a comfy spot like momma. Sigh wish me luck.

Re: Warning to long flight takers

  • Same thing happened to me - we just flew back from Europe, when I was 30.5 weeks along. The worst is the tight feeling in your legs from there being too much fluid built up. And of course using the airplane bathroom like a million times.  They are always SO dirty!

Good luck for the return trip! Aim to get your legs elevated ASAP after the flight.

  • I know it won't be as pleasant as compression socks or hose, but maybe ace bandages? Wrap your feet, ankles and calves like you have a sprained ankle and see if that keeps the swelling away.

  • My ankles and legs got swollen after only a 2 hour flight. I hadn't had any problems with swelling prior. Now, if I don't put my legs up regularly they swell so, even short flights can cause a problem.

  • I am flying to Jamaica tomorrow and my OB told me to get regular old support stocking in the queen size to fit over the bump. She said its enough compression for flying. I found the Leg.gs brand in a two pack for around $6. So, we will see how the legs hold hold up! I hope you can find something before you fly home!

  • I have flights on week 31 and week 32. I was worried about this happening but I didn't have any problems with the multiple flights that I took during week 26. I did get very dehydrated though. Maybe that is why i didn't swell? I am sure that it is not good for us either way. Good Luck on your trip!

  • I had swelling after a 2hr flight at 31 weeks as well.  Seems like they swell most days now too. Hope you find the compression stuff!
  • Wohoo score! Old China man with a small corner pharmacy, spoke no english. Pointed to my belly, made a flying on an airplane motion, pointed to ankles and acted like I was putting socks on said "BIG" and he's like ah! He even measured my ankle and knee area to get the right size! What a nice man and I feel so lucky! Thanks for the good juju ya'll sent over and good luck to the ladies flying soon!
