Books you love for your kiddos?

We got some great new books for the girls for Christmas. They have a couple of B&N gift cards, so I'm looking for more.

What books do you love, that maybe talk about being okay to be different or about different kinds of friendships? I like Frog & Toad as a classic.

The two new books we got that I love are Tacky the Penguin and A Home for Bird. The latter is super sweet and I got all choked up and teary reading it to the girls at bedtime tonight.

Re: Books you love for your kiddos?

  • Not about friendships/being different, but some books DD and my Kindergartners enjoy (these are all picture books):

    The Llama Llama series

The Pete the Cat series (check out his songs that go with the books)

    Bark, George

    Strega Nona (series)

The Runaway Pancake by  John Lithgow

    Click Clack Moo (series)

     Victor Vito

there are many more, but my winter break brain is in high gear and I am pulling a blank.

  • For Christmas DS got sets of the "I Can Read" books- in Spiderman and Batman themes. He has a hard time playing with his spiderman and batman figures (and I don't let him watch the TV shows because they seem to be geared at older kids), so it helps him conceptualize some play. It also holds his attention. And, frankly, I like that they take up much less room than the big picture books! We've also started some phonics series (The Magic Bus).

  • My DD loves the Curious George, Eloise, and the Pinkalicious books. Harold and the Purple Crayon is also a favorite series. She likes pretty much everything though. We get a lot of books from the library.

  • DS loves Pete the Cat for their rhythm and also for the fact that Pete doesn't mind when things go wrong.  Sometimes it seems like he's astonished that Pete doesn't get upset when, say, his shoes get muddy or all of the buttons fall off of his shirt.  I'm hoping that it might help with his rigidity somewhat too.

As far as books that he just likes, DS is a huge fan of the Magic Treehouse series, and we've been making our way through most of the Beverly Cleary books as well.  So far, his favorites have been the Mouse and the Motorcycle trilogy and the Henry Huggins books.

    I also love this book:

On the surface, it covers colors and numbers.  But it really is a book about how standing up to bullies changes you and can make others change as well.

  • i love smitten.  it's about a sock and mitten that become friends.  in general we like quirky books like the stinky cheese man and other "fractured" fairy tales.  i also love berenstein bears and the serendipity books (not sure if those are still sold).  serendipity books always have a great moral.

We did a HUGE book study on the gingerbread man fairy tale and one of their favorites was the stinky cheese man :)

Todd Parr books are a big hit as well.  He has one called It's OK to be Different that would fit your initial request.

  • Another favorite....Scaredy Squirrel (series).  The girls really like Angelina Ballerina.  Still thinking....
  • DS loves the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series and Captain Underpants....not exactly the books you are probably thinking to get for your DD's. They are fun boy books, though in case you ever need gift ideas for boys.
