There is honestly so many little fun songs and activities on youtube. My daughter just turned 2 and we made her a playlist on youtube that teaches fun learning songs. She knows her ABCs, can identify her letters and numbers, can count to 20 (backwards from 10), can spell her name, etc. all from these little videos. She loves watching these. I know you are looking for an app but I thought I would share this since it worked so well for us and it's free.
Just search free toddler apps, most of what has always come up for me includes alphabet, sight words, reading, and numbers. My iPad is in the other room right now so I don't know exact names, but DS and DD love the Elmo abc app because it has songs, match letters with pictures of words starting with the letter, identifying the letter in a group of 4, tracing the letter, etc. There is also an abc song app they like to listen to. 100 words, sight words, reading lite has an interactive cat in the hat book, etc. HTH get started.
This is an honest question - why not just use books and other printed materials, or things like letter magnets and puzzles? I understand using apps for entertainment, but I really don't think an app is going to teach a preschooler how to read.
My kids learned the alphabet from reading Eric Carle's ABC book over & over but that was at a younger age so I'm not sure if it would be interesting for an older child...
They also like Elmo ABCs. The only thing I don't like about it is that to move forward you have to trace the letters w/ your finger so when we first got it around 2 1/2, my kids couldnt do it at all &got really frustrated...now they're almost 3 1/2 and are better at it but I just wish it were optional.
