Measuring big

I had an appointment yesterday with my OB and she measured me with the tape measure.  She said I was measuring big for 29 weeks and is sending me next Monday to get an ultrasound to find out why.  She didn't give me many reasons as to why this may be, so I'm just nervous about it.  Did anyone have to get a growth ultrasound and know what the reason for this may be.  I tested negative for diabetes and my growth and my baby's have been normal so far this whole pregnancy.  Thanks!

Re: Measuring big

  • yes, I had 2 extra ultrasounds in 3rd tri with my son (considered growth ultrasounds). They were no big deal, just wanted to measure how big the baby was. He ended up being 9 lbs 15 oz delivered at 40 weeks 1 day.

  • Did they tell you how much bigger? My little ones always weigh more than "average" but my OB never seemed to concerned.

Right now with my current pregnancy, LO weighed 3lb3oz at 28 weeks and 4lb0oz at 30 weeks. Which is pretty big. I dont have GD, Im not overweight, I just have big babies in utero. But crazy thing is my first two kids weighed big in utero, and both were born right around 7lb0oz at 39 weeks. Its normal for babies to fluctuate growth, and those U/S are just estimates

  • Thanks ladies.  I read about some reasons why he may be big online and it freaked me out, so I thought I'd ask other moms who have been through this.  My DD was 8 lb 5.6 oz when she was born, so maybe I just have bigger babies.  I'm not a large person myself either.

  • Due to being high risk, I receive growth ultrasounds throughout pregnancy in case of IUGR. DS was 8lb7oz at 38.5wks and this baby is measuring 10 days ahead. My ob said I must produce good placentas and grow big babies. Nothing to be concerned about.

  • I have weekly growth ultrasounds because my daughter is a peanut. I wouldn't work yourself up! I think it's pretty common to measure a little big or small. Just take a deep breath and hold on through the appointment. Crossing my fingers everything is just fine for you! Look on the bright side, you get to see baby again!

  • Hey there! I was told at my 27 week app that I was measuring over 30 weeks. I'm going next Tuesday for an ultrasound to check on things as well. I'm in a similar position as you (neg for gest. diabetes, normal measurements thus far.) Please keep us posted!

  • I went through this with my daughter. She measured three weeks ahead, no GD etc. I think they mostly do this to check fluid levels to make sure not extra fluid. She ended up just being big and was 10 pounds at birth. Now with my son the same again! I have the ultrasound next week. Anticipating no need for newborn clothes
  • Just remember that growth ultrasounds are NOT an exact science.  They can be off +/- 2 pounds.
  • I would not worry about it too much, i have had 2 appts. where i measured big, at 28 weeks the doc. said i was measuring 30 weeks. when i went back at 29 weeks, baby was right at 29 weeks.  at my 28 wk, appt. i had failed my 1hr glucose test and the doctor was worried i had Gestational diabetes since i was measuring big, so he sent me for a 3hr. glucose test (stressed me out for a week) but in the end baby is back measuring right where he needs to be and i passed my 3hr. glucose test.
  • I just had my appt today and got a growth ultrasound today.  Tech said that I was slightly bigger but nothing too significant.  Dr will call me if there's an issue or she thinks I need to know more info.

BTW I am 28w 5d and LO was measuring 3lbs 4oz.  Not sure what I was measuring at though (I think the tape was around 30 inches so I'm guessing around 30w)  I've also been "regular"/"normal" up until now.
