diaper suggestions?

We use disposable diapers at daycare (no chance of cloth, so please don't suggest) and we're having trouble with them. LO still has a BM 2-4 times a day and they tend to explode up his back. They apparently don't leak out the legs, just up his back. If he has 2 of those in one day, LO has to be out of daycare for 24 hours.

a) I'm getting tired of cleaning poopy clothing.

b) The days off from daycare are also inconvenient.

Does anyone have any diaper brand suggestions that might work better for us? LO is about 18lbs and 27inches.  We've been using Costco and Huggies size 3 so far.

Re: diaper suggestions?

  • We have a similiar issue and my DD is just a little bigger then your DS - closer to 19lbs and about 28in.  I can't really say it's gotten completely better, but it has helped.  I would go up a size in diaper and try size 4.

  • We have always used Pampers (started with swaddlers now use baby dry) and although I can't say we never have a leak, it's rare.
  • We've been using the Target diapers and had no problems.

  • I would pretty much suggest anything other than Huggies.  I have used them in the past with nanny families and have never had good luck with them.  Target's brand Up&Up work well, as do Pampers.  I would also suggest going up a size.

We use Target as well. I would suggest maybe going up a size also. IMO I also think it's weird that your daycare makes him stay home just for blowouts? If it's diarreah that's one thing but not for regular poop.

Yeah, they call all liquid poops that escape the diaper diarrhea. His still mostly breastfed and therefore on a liquid diet. You aren't going to get all that solid of a poop out of him until there are more solids. Can't wait till LO starts liking solids more.

Anyway, thank you for the suggestion of moving up a size. I hadn't thought of that as I have been just going by the weight suggestions on the box and size 4 looked so big!

  • Ditto trying a new size, but also, even if they won't go with the cloth diapers, would they consider a disposable but put a cover over it?  At least that would keep it contained.

I second this. We CD but still sometimes use sposies when we travel, and a cover can help keep things contained. IME we tend to get blowouts through a leg rather than up the back, but same theory. Worth a try!

  • We also use Baby Dry and have noticed a huge difference in staying dry and not have leaks from #1 or #2. When is doubt also go up a size and just fasten the diaper higher and tighter.

  • I agree with all the PP about going up a size. My son has been in 4s way before he hit the technical size requirement on the box for the same reasons as you. He was blowing out at day care every day! With long babies, sometimes you need to jump up faster, I think. What doesn't probably help is that they spend a lot of time at day care going from activity to activity like the Exersaucer, Jumperoos and those kind of things where they sit in a sling sort of thing. Those things seem to help squeeze poop up the back like a tube of toothpaste.

  • Target. I was unsure of store brand but now I'm kicking myself for spending so much on pampers for as long as I did when targets work great.

  • Target! We were in size 4 before the weight requirement. They really aren't much bigger than the 3s.
  • We only use luvs.  I've never had a leak problem and trust me my DD can fill them up!
