Gestational Diabetes and need help!

Hi all! I need help! I went to the doctor at 28 weeks and got the results from my glucose test. The nurse said that they consider 140 as gestational diabetes and that mine was 147. So, they had me do the 3 hour tolerance test. When I went back yesterday, I got my results for that. The doctor said that my numbers where borderline for gestational diabetes (like 2 points away). She also told me the baby was in the 97th percentile from weight. I'm 31 weeks and 4 days and I've only gained 7 pounds. She wants me to do another ultrasound at 33 weeks and to see a dietician. She also wants me to test my blood sugar in the morning before eating and 2 hours after eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I am waiting on the dietician to call me back to schedule an appointment, but until then I have no idea what to eat. Also, I have no idea what my blood sugar should be every time I take it.

Re: Gestational Diabetes and need help!

  • Hi. Sorry you received this diagnosis. I am on my second GD pregnancy and I know it can be overwhelming and an emotional diagnosis.

Different offices have different guidelines as far as target blood sugar numbers, but my office wants fasting to be below 95 and two hour post meal to be below 120.

As far as what to eat you'll likely be given a carb limit to stick to for each meal. For me, breakfast is 30 g carb. Lunch is 45, dinner is 60, if I have an am or pm snack the number is 15g and a bedtime snack can be 30. Some do better on fasting if they have a bedtime snack, but I do better with a solid 12 hour fast.

There are many helpful ladies with GD on the high risk board and you'll probably get more responses if you post there.

It is hard to know how various foods will spike blood sugar until you start testing. Common foods like dairy, wheat, and fruit can be culprits and may not be tolerated until after the morning.

    Good luck! :

  • Hey I am actually type 1 diabetic with an insulin pump for 8 years but the body processes carbs better if you eat more fiber foods also pepridge farms has their whole wheat thin slice bread which I three slices per serving with less carbs then if you eat one or two slices of the other breads and it processes better because of the fiber in it plus you can eat food that are free like celery with peanut butter and meats are free unless glazed or something and you can have three servings of green beans but if you go over that in one setting it counts also juices are good for you but horrible for your sugar oh yeah and things like baked beans and other brown beans usually have more carbs with less fiber so they usually make sugars spike a little more eggs are free as well so for example you eat two eggs with three slices of that pf bread with peanut butter or even just butter three slices of bacon and some jelly and you are eating a lot of full felling foods while your only getting about 18 carbs depending on the jelly just trying to help a little Good luck
