Two Under 2

A couple questions...

How long did you wait to start trying for baby #2? I have heard that you are more fertile right after having a baby, but how long does that "super fertility" last (for you)?

Also, I have heard that it is cheaper the more kids you have....true or not? Please go in depth with this answer.

I'd like my next child to be about 18 months younger than my first.

Any advice or other comments is welcome! TIA!

Re: A couple questions...

  • We started TTC #2 when DS was 6 months old.  I had 3 m/c between the kids and they are 25 months apart.  I've never heard of this super fertility, but it would be prolonged if you are breastfeeding.

It isn't cheaper the more kids you have...diapers, wipes, formula, daycare etc.  Not sure where you heard that from, but it's definitely not true!  Sure you don't have to buy 'big' items, but if you have the opposite sex or even the same sex child born in a different season, you'll need clothes too.

  • We stopped using condoms at 6 months but I had not had my 1st postpartum period.  I stopped breastfeeding at 7.5 months in order to help TTC.  I got AF 1 week later and then got a BFP 5 weeks later.  After having IF with while TTC#1 I guess you could say I was super fertile that first cycle?  I *think* I have read that fertility is increased the first 2-3 cycles postpartum which can be affected by breastfeeding.

I do not think having more than one is cheaper especially if you have DC costs.  Like the PP said we do get to reuse big items from the first baby.  However if they are really close in age then you will need to buy another crib etc since your previous child won't be done using them.  I had a girl the first time and this baby is a boy so I need to buy all new clothes.

  • I have never heard of "super fertility."  I did get pregnant with #2 immediately after I got my first post-partum period.  Because of BFing, I didn't get my period until DD was 9 months.  My period just returned after DS at 10months.

It is definitely not cheaper having more kids, especially if you have DC costs.  We do get a 10% discount on DC for the cheaper child, but my DC costs are still $2300/month.  (Altho if you have a nanny, cost usually only increases about 10%.)  Also I had a girl then a boy, so other than some neutral baby clothes from 0-6months, I had to buy all new clothes.  My kids are 18months apart, which is perfect IMO, but even if I had had the same gender I would need more clothes b/c of the difference in seasons.  We did not have to buy any new baby gear, so we did save money there.  But we have to pay for diapers, DC, and food for 2 which is not cheap.  We decided to move DD to a twin bed early so we didn't have to buy a 2nd crib.  We did have to buy a 2nd convertible carseat.

  • DH started talking about wanting another when DS was pretty young, like 4 or 5 months haha I told him
no way lets enjoy DS for a while. When he was around 8 months or so I started thinking about it more seriously, but definitely didnt feel ready yet. We didnt start trying til after DS turned 1 and then it took 3 months of charting and OPKs etc to get our BFP. They will be about 22 months apart.

I can't see how having 2 would be cheaper than 1, that doesn't make sense. There are pros and cons to having them closer together vs farther apart and some of that can mean cheaper or more expensive for parents, if that's what you mean? Ie you can reuse your infant carseat if you have them closer together cause it won't have expired yet, so you save the cost of purchasing another etc

  • We didn't try for DD2.  I got pg on the pill when DD1 was a year old, so maybe I was "super fertile" or I was just too fat for the pill to work at it's most effective level.

Two kids is way more expensive than one.  Double daycare costs, higher medical insurance costs and double diapers and wipes. We had all the big items, but we still needed to get a toddler bed for DD1, double stroller and 2 more convertible carseats. Also, DD2 is huge and she is fitting into DD1's clothes for the current season, so we've had to buy clothes for her.
