J had his 15 month appointment yesterday and he grew 3 inches since 12 months to 34 1/4 inches, so he is above 97the percentile. He only weights 23 lbs 11 ounces, he has dropped from the 75th percentile to the 45th percentile in weight, he only gained 11 ounces : They want him to come back for a weight check in 6 weeks. What foods have you given to help your lo's gain weight? What will they want to do if he dropped more at his check? Thank you.
Re: Concerned about lo weight.
Kaiden goes next week for his 15 month appointment, but he hasn't gained any weight since 9 months! He was a chunker, in the 90th percentiles, and now down below 50. I'm curious to see what the pedi will say because we are *watching* his weight. So nothing really.
But he eats everything! He's not picky and only refuses milk, but I'm still nursing, so I'm not too worried. He also weighs 23 lbs.
Try Offering healthy, high fatty foods like avocado?
All three of my kids have always been on the high end of the percentiles for height and the low percentile for weight (At 7 1/2 years DD is 51 inches and only weighs 49 lbs 8 oz, DS#1 at 5 1/2 years weighs 43 inches and weighs 40 lbs and C is 33.5 lbs and weighs 24 lbs 3 oz.) and my pedi has never expressed concern. As long as they are eating healthy and are meeting their milestones, I think that's really what matters. I second giving high fatty healthy foods like avocado, nuts and cheeses.
I have been concerned about my LO's weight as well. He is only 19lbs, has been since 12 months- lost a little when he was sick then gained it back.
He was a decent size at birth- 8lbs 8oz so I'm not sure what is going on just never gained well. We had some bf'ing issuses in the beginning.
I have been concerned basically his whole life- but the pedi really wasn't- until now, I guess- since he was following his own curve albeit a low one. We too are going back in for a weight check in 6 weeks. He is a pretty good eater, but is constantly on the move.
He is also pretty much refusing milk- able to get a fewq ounces in him in the morning, but only wants water the rest of the day.
We may just have skinny kids! That is what everyone tells me and I keep telling myself to keep from worrying so much.
We also add Chia seed in almost everything. It's high in protein and healthy fats.
First off, it is really common for kids to drop off in weight gain at this point. Between the transition away from formula/BM and increased movement, most start to lean out. As well, with the huge increase in height, I would say all his energy has been going into up instead of out the last few months!
That said, we have had weight issues with Halle since about 4 months. Lots of healthy high fat foods really helped, and for 5 months she was on pediasure as well, just to keep her weight from dropping. Now I just watch to make sure she eats at least three good meals and three snacks a day, and that there is good protein and good fats in each.
we've had the same issue with DD. Here are some things that have worked for us:
adding carnation instant bkfast to milk (adds calories and makes them like the milk more and then drink more)
DD is dairy allergic and unfortunately had eczema return with the carnation so we just had to stop it.
pediasure juice (again dairy free)
hemp milk- WAY higher in calories and fat then other alternatives, I mix it with almond and/or coconut milk.
I try to make every calorie count with high nutrition and/or high fat foods like avocado and kale. My seriously picky toddler LOVES kale and will always eat at least a couple pieces- win!
french fries. they are another thing she will almost always eat and well, it's better then nothing! We do a lot of baked sweet potato fries since they are way healthier.
bacon. another unhealthy option but one of the only meats she will scarf down every time. And come on what better way to gain weight

DD2 was 18lbs 7 oz and 30.5 inches at her 15 month appt. She gained only 9 oz in 3 months and is now down to the 2nd percentile for weight. We've been referred to a pedi GI as a precaution. Our regular pedi isn't worried, and we aren't either, as she's always been small (6lbs at birth, has never been above 12% for weight) and she is still gaining in height (now at the 55th percentile!) but our medical group's practice dictates that they refer her.
Honestly, we haven't really changed her eating habits to help her gain. She has always been a good eater, lots of variety and does well with her fruits and veggies. I have started adding butter or olive oil to veggies here and there, and put full fat cream cheese on her bagels and toast, but otherwise the doctor didn't feel we needed to change anything. We'll see what the GI says in a few weeks.

I have a little guy...he weighs about 21 lbs. I give him pediasure vanilla shake in his bedtime bottle mixed 50/50 with whole milk because its really thick.
I have noticed he has gotten more filled out since adding the pediasure. I tried adding foods with good fat like avocado and veggies with olive oil but he's way picky. It's hard enough getting him to eat mac n cheese or even foods he likes. So I just decided to do the pediasure as a backup until he starts eating better.
My DS is 32.5 inches and only 20.2 lbs! If memory serves me right, his weight has placed him at the 15th percent mark. Who cares! He is growing in proportion and has created a normal growth pattern for himself.
I hear all of the time "what a peanut" " what does he weigh? Two pounds?" Blah blah! My husband and I are not the biggest people; he wrestled 133s in college if that gives a "small" picture! It was par for the course for our baby to be on the small side.
I guess what I am saying is... It would be easy for me to have a complex about DS's weight. He growing. Happy. Healthy. And is an individual!
I do try and make sure he has one egg a day and as much protein as he will eat. As many nutrient dense snacks I can get into his belly the better! I am doing all that I can! He is very active so I know he is burning calories like crazy!
Good luck! It sounds like your baby is very healthy! And wow! 3 inches in 3 months is a huge growth spurt! If you are paying great attention to the curve he is sitting pretty at 97th and 45th! That is awesome! Good job mama!
Oh! Also cream cheese, peanut butter, and starches would be high caloric foods to give.
