Oral medicine tips/tricks?

DS is on his 2nd ear infection (or maybe just 1 long one).  He took the first round of Amox great.  No issues at all and even wanted to hold the syringe.  He's now on Amox with Clav.  He took the first few days just fine too.  I then was telling a friend how he was so good with taking medicine and of course that night he decided he didn't like it anymore and now for the past 3 days he cries, kicks, pushes us away and I feel so bad.

Any tips or tricks to giving it or getting him to like it again?  Can we put it in his bottle or will that impact the medication? (i'd just do like 1 oz of bm with the medicine so he makes sure to drink it all)

  • I put a little of the medicine on a spoon with some fruit and fed it to her.  It took a few spoons but she ate it with her food so much better than taking it from a syringe.  She does not like have it squirted into her mouth and I was starting to dred medicine time.  HTH!

  • we don't have an issue here with giving it with a syringe... but they make little bottles that you can use, or you can use a pacifier (the kind that is hollow inside, the name of them is on the tip of my tongue lol) and cut a little hole in the tip, and while they think they are sucking on the pacifier, they are getting the meds.  Or you can just put it in their bottle, just make sure they eat the entire amount of formula/BM

  • The art of distraction helped when I had to give my baby medicine. I had this little stuffed toy moster that I dubbed the "medicine monster." I would hold it in front of his face and make it dance and make funny songs right before and after giving him a little of the medicine in his cheek until I managed to get the full dose in.

  • Thanks!  I'll try to bottle or food (which I didn't think of) tonight.

We've tried every type of distraction (toys, songs, etc), both trying (one gives medicine/other distracts and holds hands), etc.  DH is better at giving then I am too.

  • A nurse once told me to keep from spitting out medicine, blow gently in their face and they have a reflex to swallow.  Just aim for the side of the cheek and give a gentle puff to their face.  Works every time for me.
  • My doctor uses a soother pacifier with a hole cut in the end. Squirt the medicine in the top while they suck on it.
