Doctor appointment check-ups

My doctor just told me today that I am going to start going every 2 weeks for a regular check-up.

Just wondering when do they usually do the 3rd and final ultrasound? Also, when do they start checking you for baby positioning, when you are dilating, and effacement?

Thanks :)

Re: Doctor appointment check-ups

  • I was told the same thing today by my doctor and I was just telling my husband how tiring all these appointments can be :

I have my next untrasound in a week but I don't think it's my last. I'll be interested to hear what is said about the general timeline. I think mine might be different as it seems like I've already had my third one and am scheduled for another.

  • Most low risk patients do not get any additional ultrasounds beyond their anatomy scan. My ob doesn't do any others beyond that unless an issue arises.

For some internals start around 36w. My ob checks the baby's position whe she ddoes the doppler at each appointment at this point.

  • I was told no more ultrasounds unless there is a question about growth or maybe position toward the end.

  • my midwife said they will do one last ultrasound at around 36-37 weeks to check growth and position. however, at my last ultrasound she was measuring a week ahead and even a bit large for that estimate. so im not sure if thats why im getting the last ultrasound but the midwife made it sound as though it was routine

and im not 100% on checking for dilation but i want to say that will start around 36 weeks as well. but i was also GBS+ so i would think they would want to keep the checks to a minimum and only do one towards the very end.

  • I'm high risk so I've been having checkups every two weeks for a bit now, and at 32 weeks I'll start going in weekly for NSTs. I also have a schedule for ultrasounds every 4 weeks to check growth starting in the third trimester. No mention has been made to me about checks, but I assume I'll have one/the first around 37 or 38 weeks because I'll need to be induced at 39 weeks if I haven't gone into labor yet.
  • I have an u/s this Friday, but it was planned because of concerns that baby girl was little.  If there had been no concerns about her size, we would not have another u/s.

I have check-ups next week and two weeks later.  After that, I will go in every week until this little one is born.

This is what my OB told me. By growth the OB told me if the baby is measuring 2 weeks behind or 2 weeks ahead.

  • Like most stuff, it depends on your OB/MW.  Mine doesn't usually do another u/s unless there's a reason to- most low-risk moms don't get another.  My office also doesn't do internals unless you request one, I didn't have any with DD.  Since you can be 80% effaced and 2cm dilated for weeks, they're kind of pointless IMO.

  • Really depends on your doctor's individual practice, so a question you should ask them.

With my first pregnancy, the doctor didn't do extra ultrasounds OR internal exams. Of course, he wasn't an OB. He was a resident at a hospital-associated clinic (insurance issues in the 3rd trimester, not my first choice).

With my second pregnancy, the doctor did do an ultrasound around 34 weeks, but he also didn't do the 20 week anatomy scan as routine. I had to request that one and he sent me to another doctor to get it done. He also would not have done internal exams until I was 40 weeks (to discuss options of induction, etc.) and only if I requested them.

With my current OB, a 3rd trimester ultrasound is not routine. One was requested because I was measuring ahead, but it was a special request. At my next appointment, I plan to ask him about his practice once I get close to my due date. I don't see any reason for internal exams until I'm closer to 40 weeks, and that's only because I am seriously considering a RCS over induction once I hit my due date and how dilated I am may have an effect on my final decision.

  • Around here they don't usually do a third ultrasound.  I've lost count as to how many I've had due to being high risk.  I go to dr every 2 weeks now and have an u/s each time.

  • I'm high risk so I've had an u/s every 4 weeks since 20 wks. I've been seeing my OB every 2 weeks for a while now and starting on the 8th I will be going to see my peri weekly for fetal monitoring along with an u/s each time. I had eclampsia with my first so now is the time where I'm being watched like a hawk. So far so good this time around, last time by this point I was on total bed rest!

  • Usually, there is no 3rd ultrasound unless there is a need to do one. Babies can turn easily until 36 weeks, so that is when my OB will check for positioning. My practice starts doing internals at 35 weeks.
  • my doc said no more ultrasounds unless they see an issue. also, they wont even check for positioning until then.

  • As others have stated, no other u/s unless there is a reason ( I had one with my first because I was consistently measuring large). My OB said they can usually tell the positioning of the baby by where the hb is located but if for some reason they can't, they will do a u/s at the end to see.
  • I wont be getting another ultrasound.  The doctor just measures my belly and feels around for the baby, and heartrate.

I think that next week starts the weekly OB checkups for me.  All these appointments are getting to be a bit much.

  • My office does a growth ultrasound on everyone around 33 weeks. With my first DS, I had 2 additional ones between 34-40 weeks to check growth.

Oh okay, I didn't realize so many don't do a 3rd trimester one. It's routine at my office, but thanks.
