Physical Therapy

Has anyone gone to PT for sciatica and if so did you find it helpful? My doctor suggested it today but he didn't seem too enthused about it working, he was just kind of "meh" about it. Mine hadn't been that bad, mostly just annoying until recently...I'm dying for some relief now.

Re: Physical Therapy

  • I haven't had any PT but I do see my chiropractor every two weeks.  My insurance also covers prenatal massage so with those combined I have been doing much better with the sciatic with only an occassional occurrence.  When that does happen I just take into practice some of the stretching techniques or other advice my chiroprator gave me to help relieve the pressure.

  • When I first found out I was prengnat I was already starting to have back problems. (I've had some back issues most of my life.) My MW suggested PT, but I honestly just brushed it off and don't really feel like I have the time to go. She hasn't mentioned it since and my back hasn't been too bad. Towards the end it might be a good thing to check into, but my MW seemed pretty "meh" about it too.

  • DH was prescribed PT for his back, but he ended up having surgery on it anyway.  However, he said the one part he LOVED about PT was when they stuck the little zappy things (I should be a doctor, I have so much medical know-how) on his back, and the little zaps actually felt really good.

  • Yeah I had asked about the Chiropractor as well but he said that PT would be more helpful, he just didn't seem like he thought it would do much. He also suggested yoga and I get monthly prenatal massages but my sciatica pain seems to be concentrated more in the top of my right butt cheek then my back. I can't shave or put my pants on or even walk comfortably at this point, oddly enough I'm perfectly fine when I'm on the elliptical so maybe I'll just hang out on there for the next four months :)

  • I slipped a disc in my back a year ago and it really did some damage on my sciatic nerve. I had trouble in the exact same spot and the PT actually helped.

The stretch that best helped me was to lay on my left side with my legs parallel. Then with your right foot stretched flat "push" your right leg towards the wall opposite your head. That will allow the nerve to stretch and give you some relief.

  • Chiropractic can do wonders!  My GF is seeing one now for sciatica, she is 12 weeks and gets instant relief!!

You might try this stretch--it helps me when I have that type of pain

It's from here: https://doubleyourgains.com/stretches-for-lower-back-pain they call it the seated butt stretch.  I can still manage it at this point--some of the others are too difficult now.

That stretch works because you have piriformis syndrome causing sciatic pain.

  • I am a physical therapist and "sciatica" is one of the more common conditions I (and likely most PTs treat). I definitely recommend PT but keep in mind it will most likely take some time to be effective. The exercises and stretches will likely help temporarily and youll need to keep up with your "homewok" as the cause for your symptoms (ie pregnancy) won't go anywhere until your due date.  Getting into a good program asap can ease pain both now and post partum...so its worth a try IMO. Also, while all PTs are qualified to work with pregnant women, your OB may know some who specializes in women's health/pregnancy and that would be optimal (but sometimes hard to find). GL with whatever you choose...hope you find some relief!
