STM- did you buy a new crib for second baby?

My DD is 2.5 and already out of her crib and in to a big girl bed. For selfish and completely aesthetic reasons I am wanting to get a new crib for the baby's room. MY daughters crib is off white, with four large posts and round finials on the top...it is super girly. My mom purchased the crib for us and I am greatly appreciative of this but Im just having a really hard time thinking of putting our little boy in it. I would be ok with the crib if we painted it another color , but at this point I'm thinking it would be the best idea to sell it and I don't think it will be worth as much if we paint it. I found an adorable black, masculine crib for a great price and Im thinking of getting if for our DS. Anyone else buy a new crib for the second (or third) baby? Am I being completely irrational?

  • Li is still in her crib and I'm in no rush to get her out. She's tiny, so size wise, she'll be in it for a while. The new baby will be getting all new furniture.

My grandmother bought li's furniture and had said to me, don't worry about another baby or getting transition furniture, we will get you new stuff.

  • No, we used the same crib for #2 and baby #3 will be using the crib again regardless of sex.

  • We're going to use the same crib. I don't see the point in spending a bunch of money on something we already have and will only use for 2 years. But if you have the money and it makes you happy, why not?

  • we are reusing the crib and my sister who is due in July is using our second crib.  With everything I've read about sids though I am getting the baby a new matress.  I'll also buy her her own bedding and quilt set but will reuse most of the sheets I used for my girls. (some I need to throw away!)

  • We are getting a new crib for this baby, but only because we had a drop-side crib with our first-- we had it before the recall. I understand asthetic reasons and everything, but I'd just paint it or something instead of buying a whole new one. If you really want a different one, definitely sell that one on CL and then buy a new one.

  • We are using the same crib.

  • I personally wouldn't it (I'd probably paint it), but if you have the money and you want to buy a new one ... go for it. It's up to you.

  • Zoe is 21 months and is still in her crib and will be until after the baby is here. The new baby will probably stay in our room for the first few months and then we will worry about the transition to the toddler bed and crib. Same crib.

  • We're buying a second crib, but only because we're keeping DD in her crib for as long as possible. We bought a gender neutral crib that would fit a boy just, and we're planning on buying the same one for this baby, boy or girl.

I wouldn't buy a new crib if I had a perfectly safe, usable one already, girly or not. Babies don't know what they're sleeping in. If you really can't handle it, though, I'd suggest selling it then buying a new one. Or if you have the money to just buy a new one, go for it. It's your money and your choice.

  • We're probably buying a new one but only because DD is still in hers and I think she still will be by the time LO2 needs it.

We're playing the wait and see game though.

  • DS1 was still in his crib when DS2 was born.  We lucked out and got a 2nd crib from a family friend.

In your situation though, there is no way I would get another crib.  But I am really cheap and wouldn't care at all about putting a boy in a "girly" crib.

  • Ds has been out of his crib for 2 years almost. We sold it for almost as much as we bought it. We will be buying a new crib for this one. It's your money do what you want.
  • no, we are using the same crib.
  • You're not being irrational...we want nice things and it's just human nature. If you can't justify buying a new one for real though, maybe try refurnishing the old one. Give it a good new paint job in black or espresso. It could help!?

  • We will be using the same crib. DH built the crib himself so it has sentimental value. But even if we had bought the crib in a store I would still re-use the same crib for baby #2. I can't see the logic behind buying a whole new crib, it's a big piece of furniture, that's usually kinda pricey, and that money can be put to more important things.

  • No DS never used it so it just sat in my room. DD started using it at around 5-6 months and still uses it she has a big girl bed since before her first birthday I just never thought she was ready for it. Though I have caught her twice lifting her leg and trying to climb out of her crib so she will be using her big girl bed soon. The new baby will inherit the crib. After this little one though I will sell it on craigslist if it;s still in good condition.

  • Were using the same crib, I did want another color but really its such a waste of money to buy a new one for such a short time.  I'd rather invest in nice "big kid" furniture a few years down the road.

  • We will be buying a new one.  DS's was a convertible and he's currently in the full-size bed set up (and it looks really nice fwiw!!).  I'd like something girly and white this time around anyway.

  • DD's crib converted into a full size bed which she is using now. So yes we will be buying new crib and furniture for #2.

Could you try selling the crib you have now to use towards a new one?

BabyFruit Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Nope. DD is three and in a twin bed. We bought a GN crib so this wouldn't be an issue (though we're expecting another girl anyway).

Personally, there are a lot of things I'd rather spend money on than a new crib.
