Explain it like I'm 5

I feel like a nerd even asking but how does this 1st birthday party work? Last time I went to a kid's birthday party, I was a kid. I don't think I've ever been to a party for a toddler.

We are inviting the 7 kids from our play group plus their parents, my parents, DH's parents, BIL+SIL. I was assuming the kids would play on the floor with all of Connor's Christmas toys. We'd have a light lunch, Connor would smoosh a cupcake. The end.

Someone posted somewhere that they "aren't planning too many games." Too many games? I was planning no games am I missing something?

  • I don't think games would work at a 1 yr old's party unless there are several older kids. I went to a 1 yr old's party a few months ago, and there were no games. We just sat around and ate, the kids played on the floor, then we watched him open his gifts. then we went home.

  • I think the games and goody bags are more for if there are a bunch of older kids there.  Allison's party will have one other 1 year old and three older kids (all my cousins' kids) so no need for games or goody bags.

We are doing lunch, cake and presents.  There is room for the kids to play if they get bored so I'm not worried about them.  It is mostly a party for me and DH and I freely admit that!

  • We're having a large party out of necessity. (meaning: Invite one, invite all, or catch holy h-e-double-hockey-sticks for all eternity from the extended family taht didn't get invited.)

I don't plan on doing games/having entertainment for the kids of my cousins/friends. They'll be there to eat lunch, watch Aria open her gifts, and have cake and ice cream. I'm also not doing party favors. IMO they're a big waste of money. We're having the party at a cabin in the park. If the kids need entertainment, they can bundle up and hit the playground. When Aria is older and the parties consist of mostly her friends, I'll have games and favors. I just don't feel the need for it right now.

Ok, the bolded is what I was thinking, I just didn't want to miss some secret memo that there had to be a plan for this party.

  • All I am doing is ordering a party sub, salads and the cake. I will have some decorations for his theme but I'm not going crazy. There will only be about 9 kids all together, two of which are 16 so I am not that concerned about party favors, for a 1 year old, I too think that's pretty young for all that.

  • The only organized thing I have planned is something I have done for the girls every year.  One of their gifts from me is a book, and I write the year and a message to them in it.  We read it at the party.  Always a big hit with the kids.  Sometimes I do book themed parties (my favorite by far is Teddy Bear's Picnic).  I have no idea what book to get DS, and usually just hit Half Price Books until something jumps out at me.

We don't know any babies, so we are not inviting any babies.  This really bums me out, as with the girls, more friends had LOs and DD was in MDO, and I knew several moms, so the girls had parties with lots of little kids.  DS' party will have only a few older kids....

  • I'm having quite a few older kids at Skyler's party because all of her cousins are much older than her, the closest is 3.  I will have them pin the hat on the jester and decorate mardi gras masks.  They will have free range to play with the masks all day, the only true game will be pin the hat on the jester.

I will also have the Wii set up for the kids to play with that.  I will keep them entertained the way I entertained them on Christmas day.  Playing video games and playing with Skyler's toys, coloring books and drawing on the wall in her playroom (I painted it with chalkboard paint).

We are going to have about 4 babies there, but none older than 14month. I am doind hair bows as favours for the girls (totally in theme) and considering suspenders for the boy. I understand why toys etc. would be ridiculous and candy is just nuts.

  • We will have a few kids under 2years old so we are going to set up the play yard and throw in those balls for a ball pit.  I figure the younger kids will enjoy it and it keeps them corralled.  For party favors I'm just sending home treats in those chinese box things.  There will will animal crackers and wafers for the younger ones and rice krispies and cookies for the older crowd.

  • My SIL did games for all my 3 nieces till they were 4. The games were for the adults. When they turned 1, it was questions of their birth, how much they weighed, what time was it, what was the weather like....etc. Then it was like bingo type games or fill in the blank when they turned 2. I don't plan on doing games for Jackson though. He does have older cousins but I feel it will be to much for his 1st birthday and we honestly dont have a ton of room for lots of things to be going on.

  • My parents are recently divorced after 26 years of marriage sooooo I am throwing ONE birthday celebration between 3 and 5PM (between nap and dinner time) that will have finger foods and cake. If you come, great; if not that's on you. This is all trail and error with them so I figure we'll start small and as we are more comfortable in our new blended family roles we can expand and figure it out.

  • I am not planning any games.  Once the kids are older...yes I will.  But it is for a one year old!  They can just play and eat :)
