Food Allergy

Holidays with allergies :(

Hi! I dont post on here very much but I love reading and getting ideas and recipies! My DD is just about 2 and she has dairy/soy/egg/wheat/peanut/tree nut allergies. She doesnt really tolerate rice but she doesnt have an "allergic" reaction but her eczema flares up terribly. The allergist wont test her for it because she doesnt have hives when she eats it. Anyways we went to my sister in laws house for new years day (our entire family knows of her allergies) and there are deviled eggs everywhere, peanuts, cheese, etc. I know that we they cant be completely free of these things because she is literally allergic to everything but I just wish there werent peanuts and almonds in EVERY dessert and eggs in every room. I have to hold her the entire party to make sure no one touched her after they eat and she doesnt grab something. (She breaks out in hives if you dont wash your hands after eating any of these items) Today her eczema is completely flared up. Could she have broken out in eczema because all of these allergens were near her for so long? Has anyone else had this issue??? TIA

Re: Holidays with allergies :(

  • We haven't yet, but I anticipate it in the future.  DS is only four months, so he obviously doesn't know yet.  Dealing with all this has really opened my eyes.  I wish people would be more understanding.  And while I am on my soapbox, do we really need restaurants that have peanuts everywhere?  Are peanuts really that much a part of the experience?  I bet most people wouldn't even miss them.  And maybe we wouldn't have so many obese people if they weren't eating peanuts for the entire time they are waiting for their meals.

  • Yes your DD totally could have broken out just from being near all those allergens.  I actually had anaphylaxis and had to go to the ER a few weeks ago - from Pecans cooking in my oven!  All I did was breathe in the dust from stirring them!

If your family is not understanding the severity and gravity of your DD's allergies, and insists on having all those foods present, you have to get tough. Stop attending these events.  Don't apologize and don't make excuses - you HAVE to put your daughter's safety first.  Believe me, I know how difficult it is, and people are going to judge the heck out of you because they just don't understand.  But this is the life of a food-allergic parent.  Hugs!
