CIO mama's

How long did it take for them to stop crying and how many nights did it take for them to sleep all night? I'm not really keen on this but DH and I are almost desperate. TIA

Re: CIO mama's

  • We did sleep training when DD was 4.5mo so I don't know if it will differ based on age.  I thought I had read the older they are the more difficult it is, but don't quote me on it.  DD cried for 54 minutes the first night, about 40 minutes the second night, about 15 minutes the third night and by the 4th night not a peep, no crying at all and to this day she is a great night time sleeper.  Rarely ever fusses at all when we put her to bed.  We have a great bedtime routine set up and make sure not to deviate from it so I think that helps a lot too.

  • We did modified CIO with soothing at 5 to 10 minute intervals. She still doesn't STTN, but she does put herself to sleep now. The first night, she cried for roughly an hour and a half. The second night she was down to 15 minutes and by the 3rd night, she was going down with minimal fussing.

  • When DS was a little over 7 months old and he was still getting up 4+ times a night, we (really, I) broke down and decided to let him cry, but go in after increasingly long intervals.  We quickly discovered that going in and trying to comfort him actually made it worse, and made the tough decision to just let him be.  After 3 nights, he was going down with no fuss, and actually started sleeping from about 7 pm to 4 am!  Occasionally he'll still cry when we put him in his crib, but most nights he's fine.  He'll also occasionally wake anytime from 10:30 - 1:30.  He'll cry for 5-10 minutes, and go back to sleep on his own.  I only nurse him at 4 am now and then he'll sleep for another few hours.  It's heavenly for us, and we're so glad he's getting the good night's sleep he needs, too.  Now if we could only figure out how to get him to take naps... Good luck!
  • we did it when DS was about 7 or 7.5 months.  He'd give us a few nights of STTN here and there, so we knew he was able to do it.  I was dragging so much at work that we finally decided it was time to CIO.  The first night, it was about 40 minutes, the second and third were about 20 minutes and the fourth was about 5-10 minutes.  He occassionally will still wake up and whine for a bit, but can usually sooth himself back to sleep.   I've finally gotten to the point where I can put him in his crib not asleep.  Again, he will usually cry for a few minutes, but then will zonk out.
