xp: 6mo with strong tongue thrust

How did you get your little one to want/enjoy eating solids with a strong tongue thrust? Our DD still has a rather strong tongue thrust that even the pedi noticed when giving her last round of vaccinations (one is oral) but didn't say she was concerned about it. DD seems to like the taste of the solids but doesn't enjoy the process of eating it, she has even started pushing out the bottle nipple during feedings as well. So any advice on how to overcome the tongue thrust or is it just a waiting game?

TIA

Re: xp: 6mo with strong tongue thrust

  • my DD was like this.  Starting at 6 months I tried solids once a week until it got better.  She really did not start on solids due to the thrust until closer to 7 months.  Solids are only for practice so it is not a big deal.

  • I'm pretty sure it's just a waiting game. At our 6mo appt the pedi asked if she was eating solids and I said that her tongue gets in the way too much for that. He just said "then she's not ready for it". I'm in no rush. She's a peanut anyways so solids would just fill up belly space that could be used for formula.

  • Like pp mentioned it sounds like she isn't ready yet.  Take a break & offer it again in a week or two.
