Nipples in the Shower

This is probably a really weird question...sorry if it's TMI!! I am EBF my son who is 3 and a half weeks. My nipples are starting to feel better when BF but they hurt like crazy when the water hits them in the shower!! I have tried putting a towel over top of my breasts but it doesn't work. They are just so sensitive when the water hits!! And here I thought that a shower would be relaxing!! Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make it a little more comfortable? Is this even normal??

Re: Nipples in the Shower

  • Early on I would put the washcloth over them so the water wouldn't hurt my nips. I gets better but every now and then one of the streams hits just right. Can you adjust the setting on your showerhead?

  • Having just been through this recently, that pain is still fresh on my mind. Putting a towel over them would have hurt me too.

You're almost out of the woods though. They should toughen up soon.
    Hang in there.

Yep.  That was the only thing that worked, not letting it happen.  Also trying to dry off with a towel after the shower was excruciating.  I promise it does get better though!

I kept my back to the shower but the Lansinoh lanolin made it bearable.

I'm going through this right now too!  The lanolin helps a little, and I keep my back to the shower too, but I find the best thing is to cover up with an arm when my front does face the water stream.  I'd imagine a washcloth would be pretty painful.

Waiting for it to get better, as I know it will!  :)  I hope yours get better soon!
