Short Fuses - How to tame?

My new years resolution is to calm my short temper. Ever since 2nd tri I've had the shortest fuse! I feel bad because I snap at DH and Hayley often - and now that Hayley iis causing a ruckus more often - it's becoming a daily thing to get frustrated with my own kiddo. Any tips you use to avoid blowing up at the drop of a hat? It's not always snapping at them either - it could be just something not going as planned and I freak out over it. It's like I'm pms-ing 24/7.

Re: Short Fuses - How to tame?

  • Do you find ways to release anger often?  Do you exercise?  I notice my stress level goes up and my patience goes down when I don't exercise regularly.  I need to find a way to get rid of my excess stress and anxiety.  I especially notice that I feel better when I do yoga.

Have you ever considered that you may have a slight form of PPD?

  • Out of curiosity, are you still BF-ing?

I ask because with both my DS and my DD, I have found that my fuse was significantly shorter while BF-ing.  As soon as I weaned both of them, I got significantly calmer.  It must have been a hormone thing for me.  My DH and my boss (of all people) commented about my new "attitude" when I came back from maternity leave after I had my DS.

My DH begged me to wean my DD a couple weeks ago because he was tired of my short fuse, so I did, and I'm much better now.

Not suggesting you wean just for this, I was just trying to help you maybe pinpoint what it was causing it, so you know it may not be permanent.

  • I'm having this same problem, but just with H. Everything pisses me off and I can't stop bitching at him. I'm trying to be better, but no luck so far :

I am BFing. I am going to begin weaning next month - so hopefully it will help? I could try exercising too. I think I need an outlet. I noticed on days I teach - I feel better. I take care of Hayley on my own 90% of the time. Maybe sometimes I just need a breather. I don't know.

  • I could have written this.  I don't BF so I know it's not that.  I've been wondering about PPD but thought it was too late for it to show up but I'm thinking I have always had it and it's just getting much worse.  If blow up at anyone and it doesn't even have to be their fault.  If something doesn't go as planned I get really flustered and blow up at whoever is near.

  • I don't breastfeed either. I am with Lucia 24/7 so maybe that adds to it. I hate taking it out pn H.

This is interesting. I have a similar short temper lately and it really bothers me that sometimes I will snap at Logan for something that is just normal for him to do as a baby. I've worried about PPD and I also think it could just be that I never get a break from him. I'll be interested to see if things change when I wean him. Sorry, no advice here though.

  • Have you had a cycle yet? That could be the cause of your short fuse... Hormones!!!! I was mostly ok until I went back on bc...my hormones went on a worse roller coaster ride than when I was preg. So if you have, or haven't, started it could be the cause.
