Babies: 6 - 9 Months

when to start a sippy cup?

When should I be aiming to start having my daughter use a sippy cup?  And what do you put in it to start?  Formula/Breastmilk?  or water?

So happy for my BFPB Steff13914 and her new twins! Welcome to the world sweet babies:) Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

Re: when to start a sippy cup?

  • how old is she?

we started practicing around 6 months... we do it very seldom... honestly... its me... I just space it off since Im so used to using bottles...

and we started one night with pedialyte bc he was dehydrated... but it depends on what you want to start with... a lot of people use water, since it may get messy, and a lot may not make it into their mouth, its not a waste of BM or formula...

    GL!

  • She's 6 months.  That makes sense to start with water so we're not wasting bm/formula.  Thanks!

    your welcome...

and a lot of people say to take out the little stopper thing so they don't have to suck as hard, so they know what is coming out of it... but we didn't have an issue with it being in there... that way it wasn't 'free-flowing'

  • You can start anytime now.  I like the NUK or Nuby soft spout cups for this age.  We give one with water every night at dinner - mainly it keeps her busy for a few minutes so we can eat :)  We introduced it around 5 months but really she just started actually doing well with it in the last 2 weeks.

  • I started around the time that LO was actually eating solids (instead of basically playing) so around 7 months, and I just offer a sippy with solids. With DD, I tried a bunch of types and had to teach her how to use the straw, we still use a straw sippy.

With DS, he picked up his sisters cup, and I figured that I would let him play with it and he immediately started sucking water up the straw...go figure. So he started water around 6.5 months.

If you start cereal or solids, you need to start water, to help their little kidneys.  So we started water when we did cereal, at 4.5 months.  We now add about one Tbs of juice to his water, because he hated plain water- Juice started at 6 months.  By 6 months (ish) they should be having anywhere from 4ozs up of water per day to help with their digestion.  (We are a Super Baby Food family, if that helps explain the logic behind this. LOL )

  • We introduced the NUK sippy cup to LO after 6 months and he's a pro at holding it himself! The pedi said we can start juice, so we give him 100% pear juice watered down.

  • I'm trying a varied type of sippies. Mostly I use watered down apple juice, it helps dd now she's on solids to digest better, keeping her from getting constipated. Still use a bottle too. She is fine with a sippy just trying to configure the method.

It's so funny to watch. I will place the sippy on her playmat so she can familiarize in her own time. She kinda gets the idea. she will crawl over to it, hovering over th cup. lean down & suck from the floor in a push up style, cracks me up! I'm going to get a soft straw one because it's easier for her to suckle.

  • We introduced one around 4 months. We have a few different kinds and DD doesn't understand how to drink from any of them. I just put water in them, and when I take the lid off, she loves to drink the water. We've tried soft spout and the straw type and a few different brands. I keep giving it to her, she loves to hold it and pretend she knows what she's doing, but she just ends of chewing on the spout or straw.
  • My son is almost 8 months and still isn't "getting" the sippy cup. We have tried a few different kinds, but he still just chews on the spout. I was thinking of trying a straw kind since others have said they had success with it, but how do you go about teaching them to suck on the straw?
