Scared of the vacuum

Anyone else's LO afraid of the vacuum cleaner? DD acted like she was afraid for my life yesterday when I was cleaning up pine needles. She didn't even want me to touch it when it wasn't running. It was very over dramatic and made me feel awful. What should I do? Keep vacuuming in front of her so she will get used to it or avoid vacuuming when she is in the room until she gets a bit older?

  • Mine is quite the opposite.  In fact, he loves it.  He is mesmerized by the thing!

  • Ian was terrified of it for a while. I would have to hold him while I vacuumed. He finally got used to it and doesn't scream now. He actually chases the vacuum. So, maybe try holding get her while you're vacuuming just so she gets used to it and can see that it's not a bad thing.

  • My DD is also scared of the vacuum. It's been going on for awhile now and seems to only be getting worse. I used to be able to do it if I was holding her, but now she hates that as well. When I am desperate, I've put her in her high chair with a snack or a toy and vacuumed the living room, but this still makes her upset. Since it's getting worse, I think I should just stop vacuuming around her for now. I feel like I am scarring her for life! She gets scared if she sees the vacuum out even if it's not turned on and we aren't near it.

  • I am so glad someone thought to ask this... my DD is also terrified of the vacuum cleaner... I have tried holding her I have tried putting her In a different room... tried the.high chair... ughhh... she even shakes when I turn it on! We have two labs althat are shedding like crazy and over a foot.of snow outside that they love to bring in so I NEED to vacuum frequently!
  • I wish! Olivia had a pretty bad injury due to our vacuum (she stuck her hand underneath when my mom wasn't looking and it took off the top layer of skin) but she's still completely into the vacuum.

We just got a toy vacuum, maybe that would help those who are afraid of it? You could have them use theirs alongside you pretending to use yours (maybe with it off at first?).

  • Okay I may try to expose her to it a few more times but like a pp said her fear seems to be getting worse. If it doesn't improve then I'll just avoid vacuuming around her for a few weeks and then try again. I just hate for her to be so afraid! Glad to know she's not the o lt one.
