Nurseries and Baby Gear

Are you painting the nursery?

People keep asking if we're finding out the sex, and when I say we are they mention something about how it'll be great to know what color to paint the nursery. This leads me to wonder...How many people are actually painting their nursery a baby friendly color?

We'll probably decorate in gender neutral colors no matter what, but I'm not sure if we want green or yellow walls on any room in our home. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, I just lack the creative vision to see how to do this in a way that will work for at least 3 or 4 years.

  • I painted the nursery, but not a "baby" color.  I painted it a nice medium grey, and I love it.  But that's just me - I hate "babyish" nurseries.

I think that's exactly how I feel. I just can't imagine a super bright or pastel color on any wall in our home. I'm thinking we can use something subtle, like gray or beige, then decorate in a way that makes it seem more like a nursery.

  • Our nursery has beige walls. Color was introduced through a tree decal and other accents.

This. We are painting the room gray. I am not in to "themes" in nurseries. I want the room to be able to grow with the child so we really just chose a color scheme and are going with it. I will say our daughters room is a really soft pinky/coral which sounds awful when I describe it but it is definitely not babyish.

We covered up a lime green that came with our house with a medium gray. Anonymous by Behr. Love it!

  • We painted DS's room a deep blue before he was born.  Definitely not a "baby" color.  If this one is a boy, I want to paint his room a darker green.  If it's a girl, the room will be a deep purple.  I despise pastel colors and absolutely hate the beige that every room in my house was painted when we moved in.  If I could afford it, every room would be painted.

  • We painted the walls a bright lime green. It wasn't necessarily baby friendly but it wasn't a color I'd pick for any other room of the house.

  • We are having a mural painted in our nursery. Bedding will be Camo and my [artist] aunt will paint Mike the Tiger dressed in Camo hunting the SEC mascots. (DH is an avid hunter/fisher, as well as die-hard LSU fan)

  • We painted our guest room a nice share of green when we bought our home three years ago, knowing it would be the future nursery. We don't plan on finding out the sex, but even if we did we'd do a neutral themed nursery.

  • Yes, both times; bright shades of blue and green for DS and now yellow and purple for DD

  • We're painting it blue (H2O by Benjamin Moore), it'll be slight brighter than the master bedroom.  Really the paint and the crib (bedding) are the only moderately "baby" things going in the nursery.  Otherwise, its mostly our surfboards, and perhaps some of my photography.

  • Our nursery has green walls but it had green walls when it was previously the guest room. I'm sure we will paint it a different color someday when both kids are old enough to care who has which room and what color the walls are.

    I agree about "babyish" nurseries.

We left the walls their original color, a light tan. We decorated by hanging some animal prints on the walls and using blue green storage baskets and a blue rug, appropriate for an older kid too, so we won't have to redo it when he gets older.

  • With DD we painted two walls and put decals on them. They aren't a "baby color" they're a cool green that'll grow with her.

With this one we haven't painted anything but have a wall covered in a built-in wardrobe that is a beautiful grey color and have a decal on a white wall.

Both rooms are gender neutral and will grow with them for a while.

  • I know that you said that you have already painted, but if you are looking for another option to makeover the nursery, you may want to consider this contest sponsored by 21st Century for a car seat giveaway as well as a $10,000 make over grand prize: https://www.21st.com/landing-pages/en/baby-on-board.jsp
  • The walls in our nursery are currently yellow, which I can't stand so we are painting them. We are going with a medium tan color though. If the walls had already been a neutral color like the rest of our house we would have just left them.

  • We painted our nursery a medium beige. White furniture and wall decal, accents in green and lavender once we found out it was a girl.

We wanted it fairly neutral in case number two is a boy, since they will have to share the room for a couple years before we move. We can tone down the lavender easily, since its really only her bedding and a small throw rug, and add some boy stuff if need be.

  • I painted my baby's (a girl) nursery tan. And I'm adding pink accents, I couldn't find the perfect pink so I figured a medium tan would go great with the cherry crib and pink roses

This is exactly what we're doing (right down to the gray color). I want a neutral background we can jazz up for the baby w/accessories, but that will grown with the little guy as he gets older.

  • We painted #1's grey & aqua...not exactly baby colors, but gender specific to the theme that we did and has grown with our little guy. We're waiting to find out the sex of #2 before we start painting the second nursery.
  • We went with Lion King as our theme, one of my all-time fav Disney movies. So we went with a green for our walls. Sometimes I wish I had chosen a more girly theme like princesses or something b/c I'd love pastel pink walls personally.
