Comforter - use or lose?

I have heard many moms say that they never actually used the comforter that came with their crib set.  I'm considering just getting sheets and a crib skirt.  Any thoughts?

Re: Comforter - use or lose?

  • I got just the crib quilt by itself and plan to use it as a wall hanging and/or tummy time blanket. I plan on getting solid colored sheets and curtains to coordinate.

  • I just started using it occasionally for DD2, but mostly she wants her other blankets. She's 2.5 years and still in her crib. I bought a crib set with her because it was on clearance and cheaper than buying two sets of sheets. A toddler bed is the same size as a crib, so if you plan to convert your crib (or buy a toddler bed), you'd be able to use the comforter. I never had one with DD1 and never missed it. She went from her crib to a twin bed.

  • Just get the sheets. The sets are overpriced and not worth it.
  • I got relatively inexpensive bedding sets for both my kids and used the comforter as a wall hanging and made the crib bumper into a window valance. It was cheaper than buying coordinating separate pieces.

  • For the girls I got the quilt that came with our set. It was a good tummy time mat when they were infants and once they were over 1 (so their second winter) we used it to keep them warm in bed. You can't use it with an infant, but kids stay in the crib beyond infancy and it's great then (they quickly figured out how to stay under it while sleeping). We haven't started looking for one for baby boy yet, but will look soon.

  • My LO just started using the comforter at 19 months.

  • We only have a sheet and have not missed any of the other parts.

  • We skipped the bedding and only bought two crib sheets and I made a skirt. We spent less than $30. Now that LO is 7 months old I've had to add a mesh bumper, but the original cost of less than $30 was awesome. We would have never used the comforter.

  • I would skip the bedding sets.  They're expensive and, IMO, way to cutesy.  We have four regular bed sheets and 2 flannel sheets.  We don't have a skirt since I didn't see the point, and DS has used a blanket for almost six months.  He uses one I won at my work and loves it.

  • We only used a crib sheet. Even now that he's in a twin, we still only use a large, soft blanket.

  • That is exactly what I did and have zero regrets

Also DD received several handmade or personalized blankets that aremuch more special than any set' blanket. So you might receive something similar or which to our purchase one when she gets a bit older.
  • I am skipping the bedding set completely.  They are way overpriced.  We only bought crib sheets.

  • Blankets and comforters are not recommended in the crib due to suffocation and entanglement risk so you won't be able to use it for the first year or so unless you use it as a tummy time mat or a wall hanging.  Even at 14 m, we still don't use a blanket with DD because she moves around too much to keep one on.

So I'd opt for the simple sheet set now.

same for me. I liked having the matching blanket for use in the crib when they were older and to use in the toddler bed. I didn't have to go out and buy another matching blanket

  • Thanks for all the input!  I think we will go ahead and skip the set, especially since I simply can't decide on one.
  • We haven't used the comforter yet, but probably will once LO transitions to a toddler bed soon.
