Cleaning

How do you all get anything done? I have been trying to "deep clean" all day! As soon as I get a room picked up, Bowen is right behind me dumping out his toys, drawers, hangers, and dog toys! I put him down an hour in a half earlier today just so I could get ahead of him (he was definitely ready for a nap!)

What is your trick? I feel like I am not getting anything done.

Also, what about cleaning products...while using cleaning products do you have LO around or do you wait for bed/nap time?

Re: Cleaning

  • A magical fairy named Sherry sneaks into my house every other Thursday, and I come home to a sparkling fresh house.

Seriously, I don't know how I'd even attempt it on my own.  But I am really that bad at cleaning and that lazy.

  • DS has a toy room and usually I put him in there for a bit. He can still see me because I don't close the door, just use gates. He's pretty good about entertaining himself for long enough for me to get the living room cleaned up. If I'm cleaning the bathroom, I'll bring him in there and let him use his bath crayons on the tub while I whip down the sink and mirror. For the kitchen, he has magnets on the fridge that keep him fairly occupied. For the bedroom and laundry, I just let him bring some of his favorite toys in there and talk to him while I clean. Sometimes it works better than others. Some days I feel like a rockstar and can get everything done, other days I fail miserably and am happy just to get dinner on the table.
As far as cleaning products, I make my own so they aren't as dangerous. If I'm doing deep scrubbing, I wait for him to nap. I bought a Martha Stewart book about cleanig your household and I have little chores I do everyday so I don't have to do deep cleaning too often. It seems to work pretty well so far:)

I am so jealous of your magical fairy!

  • I pretty much get nothing done ever. I have been trying to organize the toys and make room for the Christmas haul for 3 days now and have accomplished nothing except giving DD2 the joy of dumping out/pulling down everything I have put away. Vacuuming has to be done while they are awake, otherwise DD1 wakes up screaming, but everything else gets done during nap or after they go to bed.

As far as products, if they are asleep anything goes. That's when I use bleach and lysol and other disinfectants I don't want them around. Once in a blue moon I clean while DD1 is awake and she wants to "help" so I will use vinegar those times.

  • Ugh, anymore I can't get anything done when she's up!  If I need to do deep cleaning or anything involving cleaning products, I do it either when DH is home and can help watch her, or when she's napping or at Grandma's for a few hours ;)  Even with naps, our house is small and our floors creak, so I have to be quiet or I'll wake her up.  When she is up, I try to just maintain the clean, but it quickly gets away from me and out of hand.

  • Vacuuming, sweeping, and kitchen clean up are done when the kids are awake - I give them stuff to "help".  All laundry is folded in the kitchen table so Halle can't reach and anything else waits until nap and/or bedtime.

    This is me too!

  • I clean while he naps or after he goes to bed for the most part. I'll sometimes clean the kitchen while he is eating. I just try to tackle something each day. My house isn't perfect but it is pretty tidy.
  • I can vacuum and sweep the hard floor while she's awake.

I wipe down counters, load the dishwasher, and sweep the kitchen after dinner while she;s still in her chair finishing up.

I clean the bathroom while shes taking a bath.

All straightening up waits until she's in bed or I just get frustrated.

I use vinegar and water as a multi purpose spray (except the bathroom) and have a steam mop so I'm ok using those while she's around.

  • L likes to "help" me.  If I tell her "help mama vacuum" she will just follow me around while I do it.  She "helps" fold the laundry by handing me stuff out of the basket.  So I just try to involve her and tell her she's helping.  How anything will get done after 2.0 gets here...I have no idea.

  • I don't. I mean I try, but it never seems done. The playroom is picked up throughout the day. But as soon as I turn around to pick up the books, the balls get dumped... I try at nap time, but that is short and he usually falls asleep when I'm taking DD to school, so that uses up my time. I try when DH gets home or after they DS goes to bed.

  • I have a magical fairy named Vera.

But I vacuum 2x a day during naps, she helps with laundry (I give her towels and sox), and dishwasher is loaded/unloaded when she's in the high chair.

Note to self: order her a mop and broom on amazon.com... My nieces and nephews always loved theirs when they were little! Gotta start em' young.

  • If LO is making messes on the floor, I clean everything else (furniture, counter tops, apliances, etc.) really well. Then I either let him watch part of a movie, or wait for him to nap, so I can get the floors.

I use harsh cleaners like bleach when he isn't around, but my usual cleaning products are fairly benign. Baking soda, borax, white vinegar, as well as an all purpose surface spray made by Clorox that's supposed to be 96% natural. I don't remember what it's called.

  • My magical fairy is named Eileen : )

In between fairy visits I can keep things pretty clean though.  I clean something during morning naps and lunch breaks on work days.  Sometimes it's one bathroom, sometimes its dusting, etc.  DH picks up toys before he goes to bed and we try to keep the kitchen as tidy as possible.

My new year's resolution is to keep clothes off my bedroom floor so I think that will help a lot.

Honestly I don't know how you SAHMs do it!  90% of our cleaning gets done when Augie is outside of the house!

  • Whatever I do always takes twice as long if she's "helping". She love to help throw laundry in the dryer. I give her small things like socks or her clothes. I really have to watch her though, because she likes to throw other things in the dryer too (binkies, sippies, etc Tongue Tied).

If I put her laundry away she's usually playing with toys in her room. Everything gets folded on top of her dresser so she can't undo what I've done and I keep the basket in her crib so she can't reach into it.

I usually clean things in the bathroom while she plays in the tub. I use the dawn/vinegar mix to clean a lot of things.

You vaccuum twice a day??!!  Holy cow Gym, will you be my cleaning fairy?

Honestly she is still so short that I can do pretty much everything out of her reach.  When I fold laundry I do have to make a trip around the house to make sure all the clothes she "helped" with get found.  As for toys, I just throw them in her toy chest at the end of the day, I figure doing it throughout is kind of a waste.
