nap Q: if you don't have a video monitor

I have always had a video monitor for both kids.  I LOVE it and plan on watching them like this til they go off to college LOL.  the sound on the receiver went about a week ago and I had to send it back to Summer Infant for a replacement. So we went out and got cheapo sound only monitors til it's back.

DD usually lays in her crib playing with her stuffed animals for at least 20-30 min. before falling asleep.  she doesn't really "talk" to herself, she's pretty quiet, but i could see her and that she's not sleeping.

there have been a few days that she's gone in for her afternoon nap and been totally fine in there for up to an hour playing with her stuffed animals and her sound machine, but she doesn't sleep. so now, since I can't see her I have no idea when she is actually falling asleep! I put her down at 9am today (b/c she woke up earlier than normal at 6am) and she started crying around 10:15.  I am trying to put her down for her 2nd nap now and she is sooooo overtired and cranky.  i'm starting to think she didn't ever nap this morning!  so, how on earth can you tell if your LO is sleeping in there without seeing them?

Re: nap Q: if you don't have a video monitor

  • I am probably no help here, because my DD seems to be the opposite of yours. She hates being in her crib.

If she is not sleeping in her crib, she is crying in her crib. So obviously, I know when she wakes up lol. Sometimes I can hear her rolling over in her sleep, but again, if she wakes up, she stands up in her crib and cries.

Sooo basically, I hope someone else can help you here! :-)

  • Hmmm, is the volume turned up as loud as it can go and everything?  Even if she's not talking to herself, maybe you can hear her moving around a bit until she falls asleep.  Lily is sometimes very quiet when she wakes up and happily plays by herself in the crib for a little while, but I can usually hear the music box get turned on or hear some little rustling sounds so I know she's awake even before she starts talking or crying.

  • Our house is small, so I can hear him. I let him play in his bed until he starts crying. He goes to sleep right away when he goes down for a nap. So, I guess I'm really no help either.

  • I don't have a monitor at all. I just put her in her crib and some days she cries until she falls asleep, some days she plays and talks, and sometimes she goes right to sleep. Whenever she starts crying after her nap I go and get her. I don't think you can force her to nap. If she is content on her own for a while I'd call it a win, at least she has been resting.
  • I turn our sensitivity up as far as it can go, so I can hear anything in her room. They have the screen monitors, but we opted to not spend that much cash.

  • I don't use a monitor either. If she's quiet she's either asleep or resting. I just go get her when she does her awake cry. I base what time we do a second nap based off her attitude/behavior not what time or how long her am nap was so whether or not she actually sleeps doesn't matter.
  • I've never used a video monitor and rarely use the audio one anymore.  I just consider nap time to be the time that he's in the crib and either he's sleeping or resting, which is fine by me.  I've read that quiet time in the crib can be restful for LOs even if they are not sleeping.  So I time his subsequent naps based on when he gets out of the crib, not on how much time he actually slept.  I should add that he rarely will spend too much time playing in his crib. He's usually asleep or crying his head off to get out.
