Sick Babies and DH/SOs

Our poor little guy is battling a fever and respiratory gunk.  It could actually be the flu with his symptoms.  I find that DH and I go into two very different modes:

- he gets all sad for him

- I manage his symptoms, get him meds, make sure he is getting enoughs fluids and having wet diapers, and snuggle the heck out of him.

I swear that the "man cold" mentality somehow blends over into how to take care of a sick baby.  I know DH is a competent person, but he just melts if anything is wrong with B.  While it is sweet, it is also confounding!

Please tell me I'm not alone here.

Re: Sick Babies and DH/SOs

  • I wish.  DH thinks I overreact to DD getting sick but she has had 9 double ear infections and had tubes in her ears so she does get sick a lot.  He thought I was just making stuff up but every time we went to the dr something was wrong and we were even referred to the ENT because her ear drum ruptured at one point.  She is fussier when she is sick and DH just looks at her and says "Hey stop your fussing" and expects her to stop.  It's annoying!  I want to take concern when she is sick.  BUT if he gets even a cold the world is ending and he whines so much.  I told him "Hey stop your whining" last time.  He didn't appreciate that at all.  Oh well.

  • Yes, DH is the same way. Anytime something is wrong, he goes into meltdown mode and wants to rush him to the ER over the freakin sniffles. I tend to stay calm and manage symptoms, contact the Dr. with questions and obviously take him in when something is wrong.

  • My husband just blows everything off because if you ignore it it won't cost any $$$. He usually says something like this...." It will be fine" as child's eyeball hangs out of socket.

I do play out illnesses and accidents pretty cool. My mother always over reacted so I under react. I don't baby anyone.

I really don't know how men became the "stronger sex" - I think they gave themselves that title.  I am going to super-over-generalize, but women are so much better at this!!!

    Your husband sounds frugal.  Wink

Yeah, I am not a babying type.  I am pretty calm, cool, and collected ealing with this stuff.  Occasionally, I have seen DH being all sad and droopy-eyed about things and have wondered if I am being "cold" or unsympathetic, but I realize that I am giving plenty of cuddles and comfort and still getting things taken care of for LO.
