Back to work I go - Thawing BM

So this time next week I will be at work. I am so sad, but at least my mom will be watching my LO. I like others idea of using some frozen BM and some fresh while I am at work, but how do I thaw my breast milk? Also my mom plans on just keeping two bottles, so can i fill those two with my milk but obviously she will have more milk, so should I keep it in the bag or put it in some other kind of container and if so any suggestions what kind of container?

  • I put the frozen BM in the fridge the night before I use it, it's not always completely defrosted the next morning but then my husband (who stays home with DS) puts it in warm water to finish defrosting it.

I'm not sure what you are asking about the 2 bottles.  I only have my DS use a bottle once.  He typically gets only 2 bottles while I'm at work but occasionally he'll get 3.  He gets a clean bottle for that 3rd.  I don't know how long you will be at work but I'm sure she could be okay with only having 2 bottles but she would need to wash the bottle out if needing to do a 3rd feeding.  The milk should be fine in the bag until it's ready to be put into the bottle, there shouldn't be a need to put it in a different container.  I hope that answered those questions, if not could you clarify more.

  • Actually you answered my questions. In regards to the bottles, I just wanted to know if having only two empty bottles will be sufficient or should I give her more, but as long as my mom washes one for her 3rd feeding I am sure it will be okay. I work from 8am to 4:30pm so she will have at least 3 feedings with my mom, maybe 4 if she is hungrier than every 3 hours. I think i will put her first bottle together with fresh milk, then the other 2 feedings with frozen BM and keep the bags in a larger freezer bag just so it doesnt leak. Thanks

  • I usually just run my bags of milk under warm water for a few minutes and that does the trick.  I froze them laying flat so that the bags were thin and thus easier to defrost than a big clump.

  • Actually that sounds like a pretty good idea.
