Babies: 6 - 9 Months

30 minute naps

My Lo is  6 1/2 months old and has never been the best napper and is very inconsistent. Sometimes he gives me 2 hour naps and sometimes he takes 20 minute naps. It never matters how long I keep him up or how tired he is or if I put him down before he is overly tired it just never matters... I have been feeling like he is not getting enough rest and I just don't know what to do and I am having a difficult time accepting when he takes short naps. I don't feel like I am getting enough me time and am not happy when he wakes up after such a short period of time. I feel horrible but when I walk into his room I want to be sweet and so happy to see him and when he only naps for 20 to 30 minute naps I can't be, I'm ticked off. I only work 2 days a week so majority of my time is with him so maybe I need to get away a little more. Do they get better at naps as they get older? Any one else going through the same thing?

Re: 30 minute naps

  • I don't know if a bad napper ever gets better. I'm going through the same thing.  K will sleep great some days and not, other days.  I totally understand being annoyed that you don't get a long enough chill period.  I have no advice, just wanted you to know you're not alone. Stick out tongue

  • I know this is going to sound crazy, but we still swaddle for naps... when he sleeps, he turns his head to the side, so he can breathe...

it helps him calm down and fall asleep (a little longer) since the room isn't dark like overnight...

  • You are not alone...baby girl has some days where she takes two great 1-1/2 naps, some days where she takes 3-4 30 min naps (these days are most common).

  • Thanks so much for the support today was a bad day and it's nice to come on here and vent especially with people who have the same aged kids with the same issues. I sure hope myself and you all start to get hour long naps with the kiddos every day!!
  • DS is just over 6 months old and is a chronic 30 minute napper.  It drives me CRAZY.  It'd be one thing if he woke up happy (which, after his first nap, he usually does) but after his 2nd and 3rd naps of the day he is just cranky and crankier.  By evening he's nearly unbearable...so I *know* he's not getting enough day time sleep.  Today he randomly slept for an hour and a half in the morning (I have NO idea why) and he was definitely in a better overall mood for more of the day.  I feel your frustration though.  I typically can get NOTHING done during the day for myself because as soon as he goes down I'm either trying to shower, dry my hair, wash bottles, etc.  Here's hoping these LO's just start napping longer soon!!!!

  • I'm going through the same thing with one of my boys.  One is a pretty good napper while the other one has always been difficult.  He can sleep on me for an hour or 2, but won't do it in his crib.  He sleeps great at night, so I can't complain.

  • I understand your frustration. It's impossible to get anything done when they wake up so soon. Adding to my frustration is that I don't think DH understands why I can't get anything accomplished because whenever DH is home or is watching him, those are the random times where he will take a 2 hour nap! Geesh. It's very difficult, I know, but hang in there! That is what I keep telling myself.
