Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Second hand maternity shop

While I was pregnant I tried to find some maternity consignment/second hand stores in my area.  I didn't have much luck, and that's left me with the nagging idea of trying to open one.  So I want to ask the ladies here:

1.  Are there stores like this where you live?  If so, do you shop there?

2.  Would this be something women would like or do most women just borrow maternity clothes from friends/keep them for the next child?

I've asked some of my friends and they've had mixed opinions.  I'd like to hear from a wider audience.  Thanks for any of your opinions!

Re: Second hand maternity shop

  • We have one near me, and I go there all the time.  Maternity clothes really only get worn for a few months so they are almost always in good shape.  My favorite part about the consignment store in my area is that they also offer boutique items such as things made by WAHM's.  Most of the items are super cute, not terribly expensive and very unique.  They give store credit for consigned items too.

  • There's a second hand store near me that sells maternity clothes and I only shopped there once. I would have more, but they didn't have a great selection. Part of the reason is I think they're super picky about what they'll take--only stuff from the last 2-3 years, in perfect condition and from select stores.

if there had been a store that had more realistic expectations about what second-hand means, then yes, I'd shop there.

  • I would have totally loved a second-hand maternity shop. The best I ever ran into was getting mat clothes at Kids Market, but it is only 2x a year and there's no way to try them on first.

  • When my husband and I went ugly christmas sweater shopping this year, I was totally surprised by the racks of maternity clothes at Goodwill and Savers.  I never thought to go there when I was pregnant.  They had nice stuff on the racks!  It makes sense because none of the consignment clothes in the area take maternity clothes - guess they end up somewhere.

  • There was one in the town i use to live in. I liked it but it didn't last, location is key.

The only problem with maternity consignment is finding one's size - since we all vary quite differently during pregnancy. I LOVE kids consignment thought, because sizes for kids are pretty basic :)

  • 1.  The consignment stores that I have seen maternity clothes at are children's consignment stores.  I have also seen maternity clothes at consignment sales.

One of favorite children's/maternity stores is Twice Upon a Child in Port Angeles, WA.  I just liked how it is organized.  There is one room that has mostly maternity clothes.  There is another room that has mostly infant clothes.  And another room that has the toddler and kid clothes.  And then another room that has toys and other gear.  And they have new items as well that they sell.  They give credit or cash.  I have been happiest with this policy.

I actually sold most of my maternity clothes at this shop.  But I did not buy maternity clothes from a consignment shop.  I normally bought maternity clothes new on sale or I splurged on a new pair of maternity jeans.

There are other options out there as well.  There are consignment sales.  I have also seen online children's consignment like Stella + Jack.  https://www.stellaplusjack.com/

There is online maternity consignment as well. https://encorematernity.com/

  • I think there is secondhand maternity clothes at some of the second hand baby stores here, I've never been to them though.  I did buy my maternity clothes secondhand from someone on kijiji.  I paid $100 for like 30 items, I would not have got such a good del at a consignment shop, so no I would not shop there I would go for a cheaper option of buying directly from someone, cutting out the middle man.
