Parenting after a Loss

SLeeping through the night?

When did your Lo start sleeping through the night? I can't believe Jackson is already 5 weeks old. He's sleeping in 3 hour increments which isn't too bad and I don't plan on going back to work til he's about 13 weeks so I have time but I was wondering around what time I could hope for it. He has a few 4 hour naps but it doesn't happen consistently.

  • Doesn't time fly by?  DS started STTN at almost exactly 5 months old.  He was getting up twice a night the month before I went back to work; got him down to once a night (most nights) by the time I went back to work at 12 weeks.  Then it started getting to be that the one wake up was later and later (2am, then 3am, then 3:30am, then 4am, then 4:30am) until finally he was sleeping til 5:30 every morning.  We still have some regression here and there (like teething now UGH), but if you are getting three hour increments already at 5 weeks I bet you're in good shape to STTN earlier rather than later.

  • I think it was happening sorta regularly around four months...and then he'd stop for a bit to grow...and then sttn again...and repeat. It's gotten more reliable the older he's gotten.

  • At about 10 weeks we stretched out to 6 hours at night, but at four months old he still wakes at least once to feed.

  • DD2 started sleeping through the night around 6 weeks. Once I started swaddling her in the summer swaddle sack she started sleeping longer. It was A LOT longer before DD1 started sleeping through the night. It really is going to depend on your child... although, there are certain things that can increase your odds (like swaddling). Good luck! I hope it happens for you soon!

  • DD started sleeping 7 hours straight around 7 weeks old.  Now she sleeps 8 hours, she did regress a little, but seems to be getting back to her normal sleeping patterns, she has slept 10 hours twice, hoping maybe that will become the norm within the next month, but we'll see.

  • M has always been a great sleeper. From the day he came home he was sleeping in 2 hour chunks. He gradually streached to 3 hour chunks, then one feed at the four hour mark, then he'd sleep for 6 hours, eat & another 6 hours. Eventually he was sleeping for 8 hours & now he's at 11-12 hours. I wanna say he was sleeping 10ish hours at the 9w mark. He was STTN when I went back to work at 10w.

  • 7-8hrs at 6m.  Before that she was up every 2-5hrs.

She started sleeping for 10+hrs around 10m.

  • DD "STTN" 7 hrs at 11 weeks; we had a setback when I went back to work (supply dropped) at 4 mos. DD was STTN 10 hrs at 7 months. Then it went to heck with the molars... at 16 mos her 4th molar just cut so I hope we get STTN soon...

  • Around 8wks, DS slept from 11p-5 or 6am.. around 12 weeks we moved up his bedtime and started his routine at 7:30-8p (asleep by 8:30), and he continued to sleep through the night, usually until about 7:30-8:30am.  He still sleeps from roughly 8:30p-8:30a.. most mornings he wakes up around 7am, will talk/look around in his crib, but doesn't cry or make any noise, and then goes back to sleep on his own until 8:30ish.. I've only realized he's up that early because if I'm up, I'll check the monitor and occasionally I see his eyes open!

DS started with 3hr increments from day1.. by a week or 2 he was already going 5 hours at times.. we usually had one 3hr stretch, then a 5 hr, then a 3 hr..

Good luck!  Hoping in these next few weeks you start to get more sleep :)

  • I think DD was about 3 months old before she did a 6 hour stretch consistently?  Hard to remember...
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • Ours aren't doing it consistently yet, but they have each had a few 6-7 hour stretches (usually midnight-ish to 6 or 7am ish). Even if they don't make it all the way through the night, they've been getting an average of 4-5 hour first stretches ever since we started swaddling.

I think we're not the norm though, and I don't think it'll be reliably through the night for a month or so.

  • DD STTN for the first time at 14 months.

DS, on the other hand, did 8:30 - 5:30 at 10.5 weeks, then we hit the 4-month wakeful. Last night he did 8-1, then 3, then 4, then 7. So not too bad but not terrific.

It looks like you might have a good sleeper - 3 hour increments is better than DS was doing at that age, and I consider him a good sleeper.

  • He isn't. We're still on 3 hour increments.

  • DD started STTN from about 11 or midnight to about 7 when she was around 8 weeks old. Her bedtime is now anywhere from 8:30 - 9:15 and she usually sleeps until around 8:30. She does wake a few times to fuss for her pacifier, but because I don't have to feed or change her (unless she's going through a growth spurt), I feel like she STTN.

  • Hahaha....sleep through the night? lol.  My 7.5 month old is an extremely light sleeper and at the sound of the heater/dog/mama/creaky floor etc. is up.  She goes to bed at 7 and is up 4-8+ times.... I just keep believing she will sleep eventually.  I'm a stay at home mom right now so I do have the luxury of napping with her once a day.

Good luck to you, I hope your LO sleeps before you have to go back to work!

  • Don't want to discourage anyone, but it is not the same for everyone.  I learned it the hard way.  Whenever I think my baby is STTN, he surprised me and starts waking up at night.  He was STTN when he was 3months and than we went through a brutal 4MW period (up every 2hrs).  I went to work around this time.  He started sleeping through the night few days a week at 5months old.  He was getting sick a lot from daycare and couldn't sleep due to congestion. His sleep got better around 8 months and than he started teething around 9months and sleep regression again because of teething.  He has been STTN for past 3 weeks and I am hoping that lasts, but not counting on it. He goes to bed at 8pm and wakes up at 6am. This is just our experience.
