Favorite holiday story?

When you think back to the holiday season of 2012, what holiday story will you remember as your favorite?  Was it MIL's ridiculous gift?  The never-ending 15 hour car drive that ended up going better than you thought?  Your first-ever baking success?

Re: Favorite holiday story?

  • I have a few:

    - J's face when he saw the tree lit up and the presents under it.  His little jaw dropped and his mouth made a perfect "O".  He was in absolute awe.

    - DH's gift to me.  It was the sweetest, most thoughtful thing he's ever done for me.  He made me a custom book that was "our story", from when we met (including pictures and his own narrations) to now.  It came with a request that we do one each year for our family, together.

    - DH's faces when he opened his gifts.  He thanked me so many times, and even said "I know who gives out ideas for me" (which is true, I give out ideas when asked.

  • This is a tough one!

I really loved sponsoring a child with Bo. He picked the name...and I picked the gifts! I took pictures to show him in the future that he has always been a philanthropist.

All of the baking with Bo! At one point he was covered in powdered sugar and crawling on the cookie sheet!

One time O Holy Night was on the radio and Bo just started to "Oooooooooooooo" with his big lips! It was so sweet; he is an angel!

Christmas Eve was just awesome! Bo wrote a letter to anta, I made place cards for the family with their elf name on it (which was a fun game of find your elf name) We made delicious mexican food, fresh drinks, and rocked out to Christmas music. ILs came over, and I asked my MIL if she wanted to help me give Bo bathies and jamiies. She did! We all sat down my the fire and read The Night Before Christmas and put the baby to bed! IT WAS PERFECT!

This is not my favorite, but will elicit significant stabilization of traditions in the future. This year we did Christmas brunch; my husband and I both felt like something was so wrong as we were back at our home by 3:00 pm alone on Christmas night. Where was the turkey dinner? The family? The noise? We made a pot roast and invited the ILs over (which they declined)...it was just really sad! Esp since the night before went so well.

From now on I will offer to host Christmas Eve AND Christmas dinner!! I really want Bo to have that tradition!

  • I loved seeing A playing with my sister and cousins who live out of town and don't get to see him often. It was so nice seeing him get to know them (although we ichat with my sister a lot so he "knows" her).

I loved DH opening his gifts and his excitement watching A open gifts. DH is like a kid at Christmas- he loves it! It is fun to see him get so excited.

  • I hope I'll remember these were the memorable things from 2012 Christmas:

When we took the kids to Branson for the annual weekend after Thanksgiving trip, we tried something new and took them to a really fantastic light display. It was the elaborate and expensive kind. They *liked* it *kinda* for the first 20 minutes. Then it became a joke that we couldn't get out! It took over 1h 15min to get through and they were trying their best not to whine too much about it. But they were bored, hungry, and unamused. Whoops! Maybe we'll try it again in a few years? DH and I liked it. Embarrassed

This was the first year I tried ribboning off the top of the stairs and turning on a movie for the early birds in our bedroom (on a laptop--we don't have a tv in there). It worked great. A nice surprise for all of us!

Benny was not a great present opener. He didn't like ripping the paper or the present inside. But my (now) 8-yr old was awesome!! He was so thrilled with all his gifts (he got what he wanted) and verbal and enthusiastic. It only took 7 yrs I guess.

Benny did LOVE seeing decorations the whole season long. He really loved the blowup santa in our yard that he would watch from the dining room and try to say ho ho ho. And he loved his Santa shirt and seeing store decorations and all of that. He's just so sweet and this just amazed him Big Smile I loved it.

Also, I was kinda dreading Christmas evening because my ILs were going to be here for sooo much of the day, like 8 hours! I worried I'd be cooking and they'd be having all the fun playing with my kids. Well, it was that way a tiny bit, but also a lot of fun. I never got annoyed and it was actually really nice having them here. The kids were dolls and the day went way too fast! And my dinner was delicious! I was eating for two, so I doubly enjoyed it!
