puking with solids

We have been doing solids without issue for about 2 months. About 2 weeks ago, they started giving DS solids at breakfast and lunch at daycare, in addition to us giving it to him at dinner. The last few days, he has puked everytime we give him solids. There are a few possible other contributing factors: he was sick last week and was puking because of the sickness. I'm pretty sure the new puking is not related to a sickness, because we didn't give him any solids yesterday and he didn't puke. He is getting 4 new teeth - not sure if that's a factor. And I've been trying to start him on more that just purees, so he's gotten a few Gerber puffs, some small bits of toast, some small bits of lunch meat. The last few days, he's puked with anything other than purees. Is it just gagging due to the new textures? Any thoughts? Similar experiences?

Re: puking with solids

  • No similar experience here but that sounds horrible! I hope it gets better soon. If you watch when it happens you should be able to tell if it is just gagging or actually vomiting. If it is truly vomiting you would see abdominal contraction and I would expect some food with bile/mucus/foam to come up. If it is only gagging then it would just be a small bit of food coming up with no abdominal contraction.

If it truly is vomiting and you don't think it is from a stomach bug I would say to look for a food sensitivity/allergy. Have you introduced anything newer or more likely to be allergenic recently? If you can't pinpoint anything maybe go back to just your basic blander solids and consult the pedi?

    Good luck!

  • I have no idea what the answer is, but I'm curious about this. Is he puking while eating? Or is it happening some time later? Micah regurgitates quite a bit of solid food while he's eating, but that's just his way of getting it out of his mouth. Half the time, he ends up shoving it right back into his mouth. When your LO is puking, does it bother him any? Is it a traumatic event for him?

  • My  ds has also been sick the past few days. He vomited a couple of days ago and we stopped solids and he stopped but is still having a little bit of diarrhea.  We have been feeding him fluids, trying peaches and easy on the tummy foods, but he's not really interested.  It probably is a bit of a virus that makes his tummy uneasy when trying to digest solids, but the most important thing is to keep him from vomitting and keeping him hydrated.
  • I'm wondering if it was just lingering from his sickness... since he hasn't puked in a few days.   Also, decided to hold off a little longer with the table food as he may not be ready.  Might start doing some oral stim before trying again.  Thanks for the advice!
