animal sounds and pointing to nose

So I bought some newborn photos of my LO in the hospital, so I'm on this listserve for the company from which I bought the photos.  They send out weekly emails saying what your _____ week old baby can do now.  Most of them have been pretty accurate or at least my DD has reached the milestones they've listed shortly after I received the email.

The email I received last night said:

"Your baby is 46 weeks old

? He can point to his nose when he's asked, and he connects animals with their sounds."

um....What?!?!?!  My DD isn't even close to doing either of these things.  I'm not even sure what is meant by connecting animals with their sounds.  Does that mean pointing to the right animal when I make the sound for her?  Anyone's LO able to do these things?  I just wanted to see if this was crazy or if my DD is wildly behind!

Re: animal sounds and pointing to nose

  • Yeah, not even close.  Are we supposed to be working on these things?  We read books and point out animals and make their sounds and we sing Old MacDonald and Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes and point out each body part, but I don't actively work to teach them any of those things.  We read books on all kinds of things and I didn't think that at this age we should be picking topics to try to work on and teach them yet.

  • Ha!  I get the same email and every time I was pretty good with the milestones but this one threw me...really?

So I guess since she just started pointing at things we will start teaching her nose, eyes, ears...things like that.  But I don't think she is anywhere near associating animals with sounds.

She did get a see-n-say for Christmas though so maybe....

    I hate those emails now!

  • No way! I do think Paul associates animals with noises, like if I say meow or woof woof he will look at the dog or cat, but there is no way he could point to the picture or animal if I asked him which one says oink. And he sees pigs and cows every day. He's not even pointing. Maybe that is kind of coming in the near future?

  • Ha! No way! He can kind of say doggie and will point to our dogs. Or if 1 of the dogs walks into the room he'll say doggie. But there is no way of connecting the sounds! He can point but doesn't point to his nose when we say nose. At our 9 month appt our ped said we should take his finger and point to our nose and say "daddy's nose" or "Mommys nose" and then point to his nose and say "Jackson's nose" He laughs hysterically when we do it

  • Nope, we are nowhere close to that!

  • My DD cannot connect animals to their sounds and I'm sure that doesn't happen until they are about 2 years old.

She can point or grab my nose or anyone elses nose when I ask her, but she won't point to her own nose.  We worked on finding noses for about a week and now we are working on mouth.  She is pretty good about responding to direction, like when we say Touchdown she puts her hands in the air so I figured I would start teaching her things she actually needs to know.

She has only been pointing for about two weeks now.

  • D will make grunting noises and squish her nose when we look at piggy?s in books, and growl when we see tigers or bears, but I do not think she knows the difference in the animals, it is just a matter of repetition from reading the same books and going over the same noises at bedtime. She can also point to our noses when we ask her too, but again repetition from us asking her over and over.

On the flip side she is not talking yet by any means, she babbles alot and makes the gagagaga, babababa, mamama sounds, but has not said any words at all or makes no association of mama or dada for H and I.

  • When I say "what does a doggy say?" Ramona barks. She also does it when she sees either of our dogs. Same with meowing for cats.

Just a few days ago she started growling, so I started saying "are you a wild animal?" and now I can say that and she'll growl in response.

She definitely wouldn't bark or meow if we didn't have barking and meowing animals in our house. She hears them making noises and she imitates it, then I say the animals name to connect it with the sound, and then she starts saying it in response. But she initiates the whole thing.

I'm pretty confident that she doesn't know what her nose is though.

  • Lucia points to our noses if I say 'where's my nose', but not her own yet.  She loves to do it because we say 'beep' when she touches a nose.  So we do that a lot.

As for animals, she knows that meow is for a cat(if I meow she'll look around to find the cats), and she makes a pretty convincing cat noise (not saying meow, but sounding like the cats).  But that's because we have 2 and she loves them.

The little one I nanny is 16 months and she started making the appropriate animal noises about a month ago.  If I say duck, read duck, or point to a picture of a duck, she'll quack.  Same for cow, rooster, dog, cat, etc.  So maybe our LOs will start soon.
