Albuterol treatment for my sick preemie

My 3 month old baby girl (born at 32 weeks) is sick, very congested, coughs and sneezes. I think she has RSV. I took her the doctor and they started her on albuterol treatments. I give it to her every 4 hrs at home. She doesn't have a fever. I've been using the Babyfrida nose aspirator to get out her snot. It's thick, yellow and super gross. I feel so bad for her. She's not feeding well. I'm suppose to give her the albuterol around the clock every 4hrs for 2 days and go back to the doctor for a follow up appt.

How long will it take for her to clear up and feel better? Any one have experience with this?

Re: Albuterol treatment for my sick preemie

  • Oh no... she's so young )c:  My boys both had RSV at 9 months and 12 months and again their 2nd year so we've kind of pros at it unfortunately.  But they were also older.  It usually takes a good 5-7 days like a cold before it's out of their system.  They can go downhill really fast so if she's struggling to breath, changing color at all, just doesn't look good I would take her to the hospital to be checked again.  We usually end up doing the albuterol every 4 hours for a couple days and then can wean down, but like I said my guys are older.  How long has she been home?

  • Thanks for the advice. She was born at 32 weeks but thank God she did not have any health problems. She had a short and uneventful 3 week stay in the NICU. She's been home since the beginning of October. The night of Christmas, she actually slept through the night for 7 hrs. I'm hoping she gets back to that after she feels better.

She's doing well with the albuterol treatments. I think it's helping. We go back to the doctor tomorrow for a follow up, so we'll see how it goes. I bought a humidifier last weekend and have been using it. I bought a hot steam one. Not sure if it makes a difference. Hope she feels better soon. I'm off maternity leave and return to work as a teacher next Monday. My mom will be watching her when I work.

    Happy new year everyone!

  • no experience, but hoping that your little girl is better soon.  She is very young so dont hesitate to call your doc if you are concerned at any time.

  • my boys just got over RSV but they didn't have it until they were 9 months. I'm sorry she got it so little! LIke pp said, the incline, the humidifier and we did vicks on the soles of their feet (no idea why that helps a cough but it does) along with the steam shower. I also made the vicks disks from pinterest to dissolve in the shower and maybe help them breathe. we used the menthol baby wash too-it helps my colds so i hope it helped them.
