using a doppler at home

This weekend, I was given a hand me down doppler (having 3 sisters and 3 sister in laws is awesome).

It's a HI bebe brand and looks like an older model because some of the ones I've googled have a digital read that shows you how fast the heartbeat is.

I have tried it 2 or 3 times now and havent been able to find the heartbeat. When I think I hear something, its certainly not consistent enough to be HB. The doctor has no problem finding it at the office, I've heard it at my last 2 visits. I'm not worried that something is wrong, as I was just at the OB last week.

Just wondering if anyone else had trouble, or if anyone had any advice.

  • Go lower than you think. Seriously, I had to go waaay low to find the hb on mine a sonoline, much lower than the doc has gone. Also, it took me a while to find it, so I started low on one side and would sit a sec to listen, then move a teensy bit across and sit there a sec, and I continued in straight lines across my belly until I found it. • Do you know how many Mh it is? I have a stork radio 3mh one and I quickly find my heartbeat but it takes a while to find baby and I can never keep the Doppler on baby long before losing The beat.

  • So I think we heard it for the first time at home!! It wasnt super strong/loud but certainly more consistent of a sound than anything I've heard thus far.
    I took your advice-starting super low and moving veeeerrryyy slowly across my belly. I ended up finding it higher than my pubic line, and like I said it wasnt super strong but it was consistent- kept going for a couple of minutes until I moved it. Tried to find it again right away, but no luck. Hoping I'll get the hang of it yet.

     I'm not sure how many MH it is. It says its a model BT200, but as I said, no LCD screen.

    Thanks so much for the advice, DH and I were so excited to be able to hear it finally! Ill wait a few days before trying again, but looking forward to getting more practice and being able to find it faster.

  • Another thing to try is have your H look to where it looks and feel like the baby is. I'm plus size so I was so shock when we used it for the first time and H found it right away. I ask him how did he know where to try and he said he felt/look at my belly and knew. It odd what H can tell that I can't.

    Oh also your little is moving around now so it might be hard to catch it for long.

  • Make sure you have a full bladder. I tried for a long time when I first got mine and then tried with a full bladder and found it right away.

  • I would also really recommend looking on youtube for some videos of people using a doppler -- it'll really help you with figuring out what exactly is baby's heartbeat and what isn't, as well as some good ideas about how quickly to move the probe around and so forth. Good luck!
