American Living in China- Introduction

I was just doing some looking around and found this board. I've been living here in China for almost 4 years, and met & married my husband here (also an American). We're just 9 weeks pregnant now, but already struggling with going to the Chinese hospital for check-ups and looking into birthing places. Exciting to have this board!

  • Welcome!

I'm down in New Zealand (unable to change my siggy location).  Where abouts in China are you?  (Close to a major centre at all?)  I really hope that it will work out for you with your prenatal & hospitals and such.  We've discovered quite the different situation down here in NZ from Canada, but not as much of a change that you're no doubtedly facing.  I send you lots of positive vibes and good luck.

Is this a permanent thing for you guys, or do you see yourselves moving again or getting back to the States at any point?

  • Congratulations and welcome!

I don't know how many of the women who have spent time in China and were on TN's international board are over here (hi, tofu!), but maybe they can give you some tips.

Otherwise you could come over to: http://pandce.****/index.cgi?board=int

There are several women there who either are living in China or have lived there - maybe they could give you some tips.

I'm an American living in Germany with my German DH, btw!

  • Welcome to the board! Hopefully tofu will show up soon, she has tons of China info. It must be such an adventure!

DH and I are Americans living in Scotland. I've struggled to figure out the medical care here but there's really no comparison to what you're going through, I give you so much credit!

  • Hi and welcome! DH and I are Americans living in Scotland with our 10 month old DD.  Congrats on your pregnancy :) If you do not mind me asking, what brought you to China?  How do you like living there? Trying the learn and navigate different healthcare systems abroad is overwhelming sometimes. I sympathise with you!

  • Hi Ladies thanks for the Welcome! We'll be here for at least 2 more years because we just started our new contract, but we really like the community we are in. I originally came to China straight out of college to an accredited international school as a teacher. Most schools around the world require 2 years of experience and a masters degree. This one didn't, and sounded like a good school I would fit in. I was right, and found my Mr. Right :) I love it here most of the time, but there are times when I miss the comforts of home.

  • (waving hi!)

I was one of the former China Nesties, but I don't have kids (or a husband to help make them), so I just lurk over here once in a while to read the general expat stuff.

I would love to move back to Beijing and am currently trying to convince my boyfriend that this is a good idea. :)

  • Hi China Family,

It's been a couple of months since your post. I'd love to know how it's going? I'm 7 weeks and also live in China (I'm American). This is our first, and I have to admit that while some of it seems like an adventure, some of this is very daunting! I have an OB friend back home that I've asked to outline what all of my visits should look like.

My husband and I also teach here (university) and couldn't agree with you more that "I love it here most of the time, but there are times when I miss the comforts of home."
