Croup question

So we are on day 4 of Croup.  The nighttime SUCKS, I was up last night praying that C would hurry up and feel better.  He's got stridor at night, and sometimes during the day.  I've never seen this, so I don't know what's 'normal' for Croup and what's bad.  I just made the mistake of going to YouTube and watching some videos of babies with Croup and Stridor.  I'm debating on taking him in to see if he needs another steriod shot, but of course all the clinics are closed.

I guess my question is "what is your experience with Croup, and I'm I just needlessly freaking out?'

Re: Croup question

  • All of my former nanny kids had it at one point or another. But they were given nebulizar ::sp?:: treatments and were sent home with the machine and packets of the meds for the machine. Along with humidifier, steamy bathrooms, and going outside for fresh air. Does he seem to be struggling to breathe? If you do take him in, I would see if you can get the machine. Then you can do treatments on him at home to make him more comfortable especially at night.

  • Thanks Elsa.  No, they didn't mention any sort of machine.  I've got two friends who's kids get this due to their asthma.  I hope to God that C doesn't have asthma. I've been doing the bathrooms, I always have his humidifier going normally, and we've done outside once.  Maybe I'll do it again right now, he's just waking up from his nap.

  • Yeah the machine was nice...just plug it into the wall, put the medicine in, and turn it on. Then turn the mist into their face for the treatment.

  • I had to take DS back to the hospital a second time for the steroids.  THey said if he needed to come back again he would need breathing treatments.  Thankfully he didn't need it but what they told me was outside was the best thing.  I don't know where you are or how cold it is, but the cold air is the best thing.  It takes the strider away.  They told me warm jammies and a blanket, no coat and ten minutes outside was the best thing.  Mind you it was only about 2C outside when they said this but the emphasized cool air on the chest and the throat were the best things.  It took care of his strider no problem and actually made him comfortable. When the croup was at it's worst we had to take him out once an hour.

It sounds really horrible to do to a baby but trust me it's the best.  If it's warm where you are they recommend holding the baby in front of and open freezer for the cool air.

  • Thanks Sammy, I appreciate it!  I gave him 30 min. in a hot steamy bathroom, and then later we walked to the mailbox.  It's 34F out here.  I'm listening to him on the monitor, and he's still kinda wheezing, but I'm sure that the cold air did him good.  I believe that tomorrow I'll call and see if they would like to see him.

I hope that I don't have to take him outside in the middle of the night tonight.  Last night I was up from 3-4:30 dealing with him, poor little guy.
