Convertible crib - bed rail too? Gate?

Ok so we just changed DD's Delta crib into the toddler bed - basically just took the front off. Even at it's lowest the bed still seemed a tad high so that if she rolled off it might jar her a little, so we went and bought the while rail that goes under the bed and sticks uo on the side. It leaves a little room for her to get on and off the bed. I just walked in on her almost standing holding on to the white rail, which means she was leaning doesn since it's not high at all. What to keep them from flipping over that thing? I don't know, it just doesn't seem like we did all this right lol. Also, so did you put a gate on their bedroom door or do they have free reign of the house? Maybe I'm just overthinking it all, but now I wish she had her crib back haha :) Tell me how your LO's rooms are set up if they are no longer crib bound. TIA :))

Re: Convertible crib - bed rail too? Gate?

  • mine has been without a side to her crib for maybe two months now and the only reason is b/c she started (finally) climbing out time and time again. the transition, for us, went extremely well. i don't have a bed rail up; i just lay these two *huge* stuffed bears she has right next to the bed. she has never fallen out. she also never gets out of her bed or room unless we tell her it's ok. i know it's crazy but true. a couple times when she's in a special mood she'll try fighting going to sleep and will run out of her room but we just scoop her back up and put her back in her room/bed and that's that. even when she wakes in the morning, she still calls for us though she could very easily have free reign of the place. i'm aware how lucky we are.

  • My convertible crib came with a toddler rail that screws on so I don't know about those detachable ones. If she can open her door, I'd put a gate up, for sure. My son's still in a crib but I'm guessing if he could get out of bed he'd come straight to me. However, I wouldn't want to risk him getting adventurous. I sleep so deeply that he could drown himself in the toilet or unplug and choke himself on the TV cord and I wouldn't wake up.

  • We never put up a bed rail or gate, so our DD has had free reign of the apartment at night. She has been great at coming straight to our room when she gets up or if she wakes in the middle of the night. It goes in streaks if she stays in bed or if she runs out. It took some time for her to get used to the bed but after a few months it went smoothly.   Good Luck!

  • DD was hitting her legs on her crib so we had to take off the front panel to turn it into a toddler bed. We didn't put any extra rail on and she hasn't ever fallen out. She does know how to open doors and would bang her knees on the gate we put in front of her door so we stopped that. Now we use a big gate at the end of our hallway to prevent access to the living area of the house.

  • LO learned quickly that if she wanted to stand in her toddler bed w/rail, she had to stand toward the back of the bed. We have a fluffy blanket by the area that doesn't have the rail, so if she did fall, it wouldn't hurt. There is a gate at her door, which has been a life saver for us. It took about 2 weeks to get her to sleep through the night like she did before. And more than a month later, I still have to sit with her to fall asleep for naps, as she gets up to play every time I leave the room. It's a pain, but also a nice quiet down time for me.

  • Transitioning to a big boy bed has been rough for us. We needed our crib for baby #2 so we moved DS into a twin bed. We pushed it against the wall and bought a bed rail for the long length of the bed. We also have a gate at his doorway. He figured out right away that he can climb in and out of the bed without difficulty and does it multiple times when trying to get him to settle for bed/naptime. Just recently he's stayed in bed for naps after reading to him and he only gets out when he's up from his nap.
