Parenting after a Loss

When should I be concerned..

That DS doesn't roll over?  He has absolutely zero interest.  Hates being on his belly.  And, instead of that being "motivation" for him to roll, he will just scream.

As far as other milestones, he's doing fine.  He even sits up mostly on his own, too.  Not for long periods of time, but for a good minute or so he'll sit by himself and then he'll start leaning to one side or to the front.. which, I think is good for 5 1/2 months..

But.. rolling.  Nope.  He "can" do it if I encourage.. ie, start leaning him halfway, then he'll roll.. but, otherwise he has zero interest.  We've tried using his toys, using his bottle, trying it naked, etc.  Nothing.

Should I be worried?

Re: When should I be concerned..

  • All babies develop at their own pace, and I would say if your pediatrician isn't concerned, you shouldn't be, either. DD doesn't roll over very often. She'll do the "mini pushup" and just look around, but then she'll lay her head down when she gets tired or just start to fuss. So I know she *can* roll over and she's using the muscles she's supposed to be building, but yeah, she's not really into it. I'm sure your little guy's just got his own agenda!

  • I wouldn't be worried.

I bet the rolling over isn't happening yet because of him hating tummy time.  I am guessing that when he screams, you "save" him and roll him over or pick him up (I sure would), so he isn't having to learn to roll himself.

DD learned to roll from back to front months before she went front to back.

Did you call your ped for reassurance?

  • My DD was a champ at senditary skills: sitting and standing (then walking - as in moving her stand) --- really early on those.  She rolled and crawled --- late and just a little.

  • My son hated tummy time. He wouldn't roll, then, obviously. At 8 1/2 months he decided his tummy was ok and within a couple of days he rolled and crawled, and pulled himself to stand. He became a marathon crawler at that point. Honestly, don't worry. Not until much, much later.

  • I wouldn't be, especially since you say he is able to do it, just does not seem interested.  I know it is really easy to get freaked out that our lo's are not developing as they should, but they are individuals and have their own preferences and develop at their own pace.

My dd started rolling tummy to back on Halloween, seriously did it like 15 times, and then has barely rolled over since then.  Over the last week she rolled from back to tummy a few times, but really overall she seems to just not be all that interested in rolling over.  She'd prefer to try to sit up or she likes to attempt to crawl, although she does not actually move.

I really just think it depends on the kid.

  • Thanks guys!  I didn't call the peds office about this.. I figured I'd mention it at his 6mo appointment, and see what she thinks, but just wanted to make sure I wasn't being too "lax" about him not doing this if others thought this was an indicator that something could be wrong.. He is just one stubborn little boy!! He does what he wants to do and that's it :)  And, it just so happens, rolling is not on his "want to" list!

  • DS first rolled from belly to back at 5 weeks. By 7 weeks he did it consistently. Then at 12 weeks it stopped. He will not roll over any more. I could bribe him with booby to do it even. But he was sitting and pulling himself up into standing. Now at 23 weeks he can sit unassisted for a good bit of time but still won't roll from belly to back. And I've only "seen" (meaning found him in his crib) go from back to belly twice.

All that being said, I think it's fine :)
