Why don't Dr's/nurses...

Have you take your shoes off before being weighed!?!?

At my visit yesterday I was up 9 lbs since my last visit3 weeks ago, but 3 weeks ago I was wearing ballet flats, this week I was wearing big ass snow boots!!! So not fair! I wish I had a scale at home so I could weigh my boots just so I could mentally subtract that from this weeks number!

Re: Why don't Dr's/nurses...

  • Mine gives me the option. I'm not sure why you can't just say, "hold on let me take my shoes off." before they weigh you. I'd be surprised if they refused. I've kept mine on for all my weights since about 26 weeks though because it's way easier than bending over to take them off and then going through the process of putting them back on!

  • Because the half pound that your shoes could potentially weigh (if that) isn't really a big deal.

i agree.  They are looking for significant changes and your choice of shoes/clothes isn't going to have much of an impact.

I disagree.  We have 6 inches of snow now and I have to wear my snowboarding boots.  They weigh almost three pounds empty! Surprise I burst into tears at my appointment last friday when the scale said I had gained 4 lbs in two weeks-- until I remembered that at the previous appointment, I had worn my ballet flats, too.

But even if my Nurse had let me take off my boots, there is no way I could have gotten them back on without help.  DH has to tie my boots for me because I can't reach.  And they have two sets of laces, just to make matters more complicated.  I keep thinking I should just go out and buy a new pair of snow boots that slip on, but I haven't found them anywhere yet.

  • I always take mine off even though it probably doesn't matter!

  • I plan my shoe choice so they are easy to remove for weighing. I always take off my shoes, and my coat before getting on the scale. I feel it's a little more of a consistent weight that way anyway since flip flops vs clogs or boots can make a decent difference. I just stop at the scale, say "Let me take off my shoes" and slip them off. The nurse usually just says "Go right ahead" and waits for me. It's no biggie.

Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
  • not only do I take off my shoes, but I make sure to pee before I get weighed.  I know that the difference is minimal but still it makes me feel better

I'm sure I could request it, but my nurse always weighs me with my shoes on and before I pee. Drives me nuts! But that is why I weigh myself at home too.
  • when they tell me to step on the scale I automatically take my shoes off. Ive weighed myself with my boots and then without and its a 3lb difference.

  • Yeah, my boots have to weigh at least a few lbs together.  And with the recent snow, lingering ice/slip hazards and temp in the teens, I don't leave the house in anything but snow boots. I know I could ask, I just didn't think of it until afterwards because up until now/winter, I'd also always dressed on the light side and wore flats on days I had Dr's appointments.  Plus, It took me a few minutes to get over the shock of being up 9lbs, before I was like "duh, my snow boots!!!" and by then we were already in the room.  Next appointment though!!!

  • mine makes me take them off...
  • When I had my first appointment they told me, "You can take your shoes off now, or leave them on, but you should always do the same thing from here on out." And I thought that was pretty dumb because weight fluctuates throughout the day. A pound off here and there is not going to make a big difference.

Then again, I wouldn't freak out if I had gained 4 pounds in 2 weeks. That's fairly normal-sauce.

  • I always take mine off and never ask. Even if I'm wearing flip flops I take them off! I don't ever wear lace up shoes though so its really easy for me to slide them off/on. If I did though, I would still take them off!

  • I wore my big, heavy combat-style boots to my first visit, so I've worn them on appointment days ever since. (Yes, I plan my outfits around appointment days lol)

  • My doctors office never has me take mine off either. I know my weight fluctuates depending on what shoes I am wearing that day.

  • I've always taken mine off. I just say, "hold on let me take my shoes off" and they don't care. I also take off any cardigan, sunglasses or scarf. I know it's stupid but it makes me feel a little better. I figure, as long as I'm consistent, that's all that matters.

  • I doubt the extra weight really even matters so much unless you are gaining gobs of weight. Besides us pregnant people are not always the quickest to get shoes on and off.

I am a nurse and when I do triage I weigh people. If they decide to take slip off easy to slip off shoes than that's fine but I'll tell people to keep them on if it's an ordeal to take them off. There's plenty of people behind them and other more important time sensitive things to do than sit there and fiddle with their shoes.

  • My OB and nurses have us take our coats and shoes off everytime. my OB pointed out, that I probably haven't evne gained the weight she has thought I had since when we first started weighing me I was wearing summer clothes and now have been wearing heavy things. I'm only a couple pounds up from my lowest weight.

  • I don't ask.  I just take my shoes off before stepping on the scale.  I normally wear my dress shoes (as my appointments are typically during work days), so I just slep them off.

  • I just do it anyway. She doesn't ask me to, but I say hang on, let me take my shoes off. It's not like they can pick you up and force you to be weighed with your shoes on.

  • It's because it just really doesn't matter for THEM.  I totally understand that it matters for YOU (this is why I usually take my shoes off anyway).  They're looking for gross clinically significant gains/losses, which, for them, is not going to be affected by shoes/clothes, no matter how bulky (and yes, I agree, snow boots can add a few lbs!).

If they were truly concerned about the relative weight change down to the pound, they would aim to weigh you at the same time of day, after 'voiding', and in a hospital gown (this is what we do in my line of work because it is very weight-related).
