Who makes their own baby food?

I started with sweet potatoes tonight.  I made 2 big sweet potatoes.  But then i realized I needed about 12 ounces of breastmilk to make it less thick!  I froze about 20 ounces of sweet potatoes so i guess that is ok.

how is your baby food cooking going?

Re: Who makes their own baby food?

  • I started with using breast milk, but it's still hit or miss with solids, so I felt like I was wasting it and switched to water.  I made my own barley cereal, but it was too thick (I can use it later when he's older).  My mother turned her nose up at me making my own food, and bought me freeze dried organic instant stuff (link below), so I've been starting with that since it's so easy and I can dole it out in small portions.  However, I plan on making and freezing avocados tomorrow and making my own food in general when I get back from a trip I need to take this month.

  • I started with sweet potatoes too.  I made greens beans but had trouble with the consistency of it.  I am currently making peas and carrots.

I am trying to make all organic but it hasn't been easy finding all of the veggies I want to make.

  • The babyfood for dummies book says to use water. My kid loves squash and there was a bunch of precut steam in bag squash on clearance. So SCORE and also go check it out it.
  • We started with avocados. We use water though, not bm. Then we mix everything with avocados when trying something new. S we've done carrots, peas and green beans.

  • I use water to thin, not formula.  I highly recommend the beaba, it steams and blends in the same small machine.  Then, I freeze the food in ice cube trays and then empty them into labeled ziplock bags.  When it is time to eat I defrost one veggie and one fruit.  I am saving a lot of money and time this way.

  • So far it's been easy. Each batch I've made had been between 15 and 25 servings (each an ounce) and it's SO much cheaper than the jars! We've done bananas (obvi just mash them), carrots, peas, and sweet potatoes. We've done apples too but that is just the jar of unsweetened applesauce that I eat as well. Like PP I just use water to thin the food (usually left over from steaming them so it's got the nutrients).

  • Thanks ladies!  I think i read high nitrates in certain foods like carrots (and i think squash and sweet potatoes?) so I didn't want to use the water that i steamed it in.  I can't find that article now though.

  • We started with yams, too. Great first choice, op.

Jovie's up to 12 different foods do far. She loves everything. I find she seems to dislike thinner consistencies, so I just puree and don't add any liquid most of the time.

  • its good.... i just mash up part of my food for him. so far his favorites are avocado, sweet potato, pumpkin and bananas.  i made a blend of sweet potato and apple with a little coconut oil that smelled great and he seemed to love. he also gobbled up some garlic mashed potatoes! i was a little suprised by that one
