Anyone's LO NOT talking yet?

My LO is 10 mos and babbles a lot but will not say mama, dada, baba, etc...  THere was one week where he said mama and dada(not knowing what it meant just more of m's and d's sounds)  He was evaluated by speech at 9 mos per pedi and speech said he was borderline and said I could wait  couple of mos to see if speech improved which I chose.  Worried a little now b/c he's not saying mama or dada anymore just babbles with the occassional uh=oh.  Should I be concerened?

  • Connor is almost 11 months and just babbles. He can make all kinds of sounds but doesn't connect "mama" or "dada" with me or dh. I'm not worried about it yet.

  • Should they be talking at this age?? Asher babbles and will say mama, dada and uh oh sometimes but he doesn't talk. It's just babble that makes no sense.

  • He says ma ma ma ma, but not in reference to me. And he is the oldest or second oldest kid on this board. He babbles a lot. But no real words. My older son didn't say an actual word that had meaning until 13 months. If he wasn't babbling, I would be concerned, but I absolutely would not worry about him not saying words right now.

  • He won't even say mama, dada, baba or anything like that.  That's the concern.  Doc says he should be saying those things at this age not real Talking.

This is my DD.  Every once in a while I think she knows DH is "dada" - but she's def. NOT calling anyone/anything by anything specific yet.

  • My lo does not say mama or dada. At our last appointment, the pedi said we should keep an eye on it and reevaluate at her next appointment. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little worried, but long term I just don't think it'll be a problem. She seems to understand us more and more each day, and she makes a lot of noise mostly squealing and hollering lately, but her favorite noise to make seems to change every week or so.

Then, yes, I might look into it, but I wouldn't be overly concerned yet.

The strange thing I have found about language 'milestones' is that no one seems to agree on anything. There is a huge range of what can be normal. My older son was a later talker. Some words, but not putting much together until about 26 months. Some experts claimed that he should only have had a limited vocabulary of single words at that age. Others said he should have a huge vocabulary and put 3-4 word sentences together by 2. It really depended on the source, and I looked at many reputable sources.  My pedi was not concerned at all. She said he would eventually have a "language explosion," which he did starting around 26 months, and at 32 months, every day his language improves.

  • Lyla will occasionally call MH "dada" but I don't think she knows that I'm mama. Our dogs name is Bella and Lyla will hear her bark and look for her saying "ella."  She will mimic sounds we make sometimes and she babbles a lot.  I think babies are different.  There is a boy who is a few weeks older than her in our church nursery and he says "mama" and "dada" and "dog" all pretty well, but isn't very active.  Lyla on the other hand is super active.  The child NEVER sits still.  She literally crawls circles around this kid.  I think that makes a big difference.  I can't get her to sit still long enough to pay attention.

  • Lucia says mamamamamama, and dadadadada, but doesn't really connect them to us, and never stops at just mama, or dada.  I think it's fine.

That being said, it wouldn't hurt at all to get speech therapy. Both my sister and my brother had 2nd boys (with their oldest being girls) and both were slow to start talking.  They both got speech services, which sped them up a bit and ever since then they have been right on target.  If you are worried, I don't see any reason not to bring it up or get services.  It will just be someone playing talking games with your kid, which would be great for any kid.

  • I agree with Molly, there's no harm in using the services of speech therapy. It can only help.

  • I'm a pediatric SLP.  If your LO is doing reduplicated syllables in some form (e.g., babababa, dadadada, gagaga, mamama, etc.) I would not be worried at this point.  Many babies don't attach meaning to babbling till much closer to a year.  As therapists we say "First word by one," meaning that if a baby hasn't connected meaning to a word by one it is at that point that we would be concerned. HTH!

  • Ian was saying Mama a lot, and he would say bye bye. 2 weeks ago he said Dada though he has no idea why he is saying it. However, in the last week, he's quit talking. Doesn't say things as much as he used to. He's not really a babbler either. He is into making noises though...likes to growl, blow raspberries, and has learned to "pick" his lips to make a funny noise. I'm not worried about him not talking though, because I know he can. It's like he learns something new, does it non stop, and then moves on to other things.

  • I wouldn't be too concerned, especially if he is hitting other milestones. My daughter is the other side of this coin. She started babbling early, and has been saying Dada for DH for a couple of months now, and has several words that she uses (though not all the time) like kitty, mama, bana (banana), nomnom (when she's hungry), and our daycare people say she's clearly said dragon a few times. However, she didn't start sitting up until late, and was over a month and a half behind the other infant in daycare with crawling (she only started about two weeks ago) and she still isn't pulling herself up to standing.

Kids can't learn everything all at once. Generally, they will focus on one 'realm' of skills (communication, fine motor, gross motor) and let the other ones wait until they have mastered a certain level in the one they have focussed on. Eventually, they get it all down. As others have said, as long as he's babbling and clearly interacting with you, I wouldn't worry about it at all for now.
