Hello 2nd tri! I am normally just a lurker. Today I was at Panera bread and inadvertently ordered a turkey panini without even thinking of the possibility of listeria. Afterward I realized how stupid that was. Does anyone know if there is a way to prevent a possible infection before symptoms appear or anything? I think I read that it could take up to a month for symptoms to appear. Or does anyone have any encouraging stories about eating turkey during your pregnancy and being fine? I'm sure I sound silly but I am really paranoid about that infection since I know how dangerous it can be. Thanks.
I eat deli meat sandwiches all the time (sometimes heated and sometimes not). I did this with my first pregnancy and everything was fine. Not sure about symptoms or anything, but try not to worry. You and baby will be fine.
Almost all people who eat deli meat will be fine. The risk is absurdly low and ridiculously overblown. Your risk is much higher if you consume fruits and veggies and I'm sure you don't bat an eye at that. Don't freak.
I've never avoided deli meat and I've never had any problems. From what I've heard you just want to make sure that you get it from a reputable place. Now I want Panara!

I saw someone suggest on a post in the past that if you take a warm bath, warm enough to heat up the turkey in your stomach, but not hot enough to raise your body temp to hurt the baby, that should kill the bacteria.

Alternatively, if you force yourself to throw it up you'll be fine.

I'm pretty sure that was posted sarcastically.
This. I would think your bath would have to be piping hot to kill anything in your stomach from the outside. Besides, if the hydrochloric acid already in your stomach can't kill the bacteria, a HOT bath won't do the trick.
I also agree with the other posters. You should be fine (especially since a panini is heated). I think I read (here on thebump) that the way they package meat nowadays is safer than it used to be. But it never hurts to err on the side of caution.
Ummmm..... seriously??? Obvi this was sarcasm.

While I also think OP will be just fine, I do think this should be corrected. 85% of listeriosis cases are linked to deli meats and cold cuts and most people do actually wash their fruits and veggies to lower their risk of food-borne illness.
"The recommendation is because of a food-borne bug by the name of listeria monocytogenes which causes an uncommon but potentially fatal disease called listeriosis. About 85% of cases are linked to cold cuts or deli meats, says Mike Doyle, a professor of food microbiology at the University of Georgia."

Whenever I read deli meat posts, I get sandwich cravings. I freaking love Panera.
OP, you're fine. Don't stress over it!
