Is bacon safe...craving it?

Craving a BLT. Is it safe to have bacon while pregnant?  I plan on fully cooking it.  Just being paranoid and wanted some confirmation :)  Thanks and Happy New Year ladies!

Re: Is bacon safe...craving it?

  • its a personal choice - I'm avoiding processed meats with added nitrates which include most bacon - you can buy nitrate free bacon etc at Wholefoods though.

again personal choice :) Some people say yes some say no...

  • This is my second pregnancy and I feel like every day I hear about something new that is possibly unsafe. I pretty much live by the moderation rule with everything. I do choose to not drink during pregnancy but I eat everything else.

  • I had bacon for breakfast today, and it was delish.  Do I eat it every day? No. But once in a while, heck yea!! It is full of nitrates, which are not the healthiest thing to eat, but it is fine once in a while!

  • It's fine every once in awhile. Don't overthink it and just enjoy it!
  • I've heard a lot of "don't do/eat this," but never bacon. What could be wrong with bacon?? Cook it first, like normal.

This was me until a few weeks ago when someone posted something along these lines in the 2nd tri. Apparently hotdogs, bacon, sausage, little smokies, etc. have nitrates that could be harmful. But the research to how they affect fetuses is unclear and from what I gathered, the nitrates are bad for ANYONE period, but it seems like in moderation it's fine.

Either way, I am kind of over the "this gives you cancer" debate. Confused

Its true. All that stuff isn't all that good for you when you're not pregnant! lol Unless you are eating a 100% whole food diet from your own yard, you are eating some sort of chemical, nitrate, or preservative everyday. Of course it's important to read labels and what not, but a piece of bacon won't do anyone in. ;-)

    Yes

  • Baby #3 over here and no one (not even my Dr) has ever warned me against bacon. In fact, it wouldn't have occurred to me it may not be safe. I say enjoy your BLT!

  • I would also like to add nitrates can be found in fresh veggies too. So really as long as you eat a balanced diet and don't over indulge in one specific food, you'll be fine.
  • If bacon is wrong, I don't want to be right.

  • Bacon and ham were the only meats I could eat from about late 1st trimester until early/mid December.  Then I started to be able to eat other pork products, and then beef and finally poultry again.

  • The internet makes you so paranoid to eat anything, lol.  I shouldn't have googled it first.  I went ahead and ate my BLT and the baby and I enjoyed every bite!

  • I had BLT's for dinner tonight. I pretty much lived off of bacon my first pregnancy.....
  • I've enjoyed bacon a couple times myself! I actually read last week that if you have meat with a lot of nitrates in it to drink 8 oz. of orange juice either with it or shortly after and it will help with all of the nitrates! don't know for sure its just what I read!

Actually eating out of your garden might actually give you higher nitrates :) You would have to test the soil and/or the food it produces to find out. I love bacon and hotdogs. I eat them pregnant or not pregnant, just not everyday.

  • I am making BLT's for dinner tomorrow.  I love bacon and never heard of it being something to stay away from.  Enjoy it... Also if you need a good laugh, here is one of my favorite you tube videos about bacon!
