Pregnant after IF

Frustrated with potential newborn photogs

Anyone else having problems finding reasonable newborn photographers in their area? I've been doing some research and while I'm not trying to be cheap, I think $400-500 for pictures is a tad ridiculous.  With the twins almost here, I keep thinking about the cost of diapers, food, clothes, doc appointments, not to mention this looming fiscal cliff that could screw over $3k from everyone.....it's hard to justify this additional expense.  While I'm somewhat expecting this to be our only pregnancy, I want to make sure I get some cute pics. And while family members have offered to help, we all know those cute photo journalistic pics of newborns are insanely cute.

Sorry guess this was a vent! Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing really high prices....

Re: Frustrated with potential newborn photogs

  • I have heard of them going that high but thankfully found someone who is $50/h and you can set a limit of an hour or two or whatever. I also found out the hospitals around here have their own newborn photography company that comes in the day after the baby is born to take pics. You can bring your own outfits and everything! Of course that is pricy but it comes in packages so you can chose how many "poses" you want therefore limiting the price. Maybe see if anyone will work something out hourly and see if anyone is flexible to only do a few different shots instead of tons and tons. Is there a JCPenny or Sears or anything near you that you could go in and get them done? Or The Picture People. There are usually coupons or specials for chains. GL

  • We had ours taken at the hospital.  They came out really cute.  We were not up to going to JCpenny's when we got home and photographers are typically more expensive for new born pics because they come to your house.  It was just easiest to get the ones in the hospital.

  • I looked into them in my area and they were around $1k...yikes! I am opting to take photos myself instead as I agree that the prices seemed high for what you get and I just couldn't justify it with all of the other expenses we'll be having around the same time.

That said, photography is a hobby so I feel relatively confident I can figure this out. There are a million tutorials on YouTube and Pinterest so if you have any interest (and a digital camera) in doing this yourself, check these resources before paying for a professional.

  • I just started looking and have also not found anything within reason. I may just go with the hospital ones as well. Like many of the PP's I can't justify this expense with all of the other costs that will come with a new baby!

i too was disappointed with how pricey they were as I did want to take the splurge and get some.

Could you ask around and see if anyone does photography as a hobby? If nothing else, at least check out all the cute poses on Pinterest! Good luck!

  • Ouch! I haven't decided what I'm doing about pics yet, but if I find prices like that then I'll have to deal with whatever friends & family do. Our hospital does have people come in so I'll try to remember to bring an outfit I guess. Also, did you check Groupon or Living Social? There were several photography deals recently on the Baltimore site. I hope you get some better prices!

  • Have you tried searching on craigslist? For DS I found photographers both for my maternity shoot and for newborn shoot for free. they were building their portfolios so they did it for free in exchange for using the photos for promoting their work. I got a DVD for both sessions with all the photos. Even if the photos don't turn out great you have nothing to lose but maybe an hour or so of your day. If they do turn out, you can get the pictures printed at Costco or online for much less than from the photographer directly.  Here's a craigslist search for the Boston area for newborn photographers.  Didn't see free sessions, but more reasonably priced sessions:

  • As much as I hated paying it I did do it. They will only be this tiny once. The photographer came to our home and was here for over 4 hours. She took over 1000 photos. The editing can take forever also. The lady we hired worked hard for her money.

  • I'd look into getting a first year package, which may be expensive too, but you'll get a lot more for your money.
    Photobucket
  • I had booked maternity and four first year sessions (about $500). Then I took a closer look at the prices for prints and that was going to be another $1000+ to get what we wanted (not very many prints at all) with significant discounts already added in. I couldn't stomach that so I've cancelled everything for now. It's just more than we can afford on our upcoming single income with the debt we have when I have a nice digital camera and some semi-talented friends.
  • I couldn't find anyone decent for under $500, and I couldn't justify the cost for just one session of photos. So I asked for a DSLR for Xmas (DH got it used with a good lens for a great price), I bought Lightroom for editing, and have been practicing my skillz like a mad woman on every friend or relatives' baby I can!

I tend to like the more realistic newborn photos, vs the ones that use a ton of props, and I'm hoping I can DIY some good ones. It may turn out to be an epic fail on my part, but at least I will get halfway decent photos of the babies and I'll have the setup to continue to get good shots of them as they grow up.

Levi, Henry, and Amelia were born healthy at 34w3d.
  • Not sure if these are options for you, but if you have a friend who is good at photography, you could arrange your own shoot.  Another thought is to see if there are any photography students at a local college who may do some work for a lower cost.  Good luck!
