Toys

what's the fascination with the Melissa & Doug wooden toys?  ILs gifted us what must be every piece made. DS had a car and it was awful - he always seemed to get hurt with/by it and it didn't roll easy. He likes cars, stacking cups, and musical instruments.  Is it just me or are the wooden toys just silly?

Also, is it just me or are others uncomfortable with "off-brand" toys?  Again, ILs gifted DS a "little people" bus and people, but it's not FP.  I forget the name right now, but when I googled it didn't come up with much. How do I know it's safe - KWIM.

And for the record, I may sound like an ungrateful B but I don't care.  I am annoyed at the quantity of gifts received even after asking to keep it simple and support our many neighbors in need (NJ shore). I needed a uhaul to get home - it was ridiculous!

Re: Toys

  • I love wooden toys. Similar to what Pp said, it is to encourage imagination. I'd rather her play with wooden toys than all those plastic flashy, noisy toys.

We limited what toys Lj got. Name brand or not, she picked the ones she preferred and we stuck the other up in her closet. She will get them in a couple months or we'll donate.

No to be a b, but if you're concerned with toys being safe you'd realize most wooden toys are much safer than other toys. Unless they are painted with certain paints. Wooden can be safer and healthier for the mind. And no, Lj doesn't just have wooden toys.

  • Crash - i'm definitely an ungrateful B, self-proclaimed. I did donate everything except a couple books. We are incredibly blessed.

ljsmom - that's my problem... All the toys have corners and are hard, much more so then the tonka trucks (non-flashy noisy making) that offer the same kind of imagination.  I feel like I can't clean these wood toys on top of it and the one he has looks dulled (could be my imagination).

Honestly, i didn't think about googling the other brand, duh. It's not the brand I need, it's the safety. I think my IL issues shined through on this complaint more. :/

I'm the same way with my ILs. Not kidding, almost every toy they gave her is up in her closet. They will never win if I have a say in it. My mil has done some dirty things to me that I will never forget. For that, I'm the biggest b when it comes to anything pertaining to them.

Yeah, google "off brand safety issues" or something similar.

Also, what toys do you have from M&D that you're worried about hard edges?  DD has had more accidents with the door frame and the coffee table than she has had with the corners on her wooden blocks & other toys.

He has a train that's pulling a plane.  It's heavy and has corners all over. More then once it's been picked up aggressively by a LO and someone got hurt. My neighbors little girl even got a cut near her eye from falling on the edge.

I guess I'm in the minority on not liking these toys.  Just not my thing.

Huh. I would be THRILLED if we got all M & D toys for Christmas. They are my go to for gifts for birthdays, holidays, etc. I've not had one thing from them I didn't like.

The top gifts in our house were a wooden switchback race track and these awesome wooden blocks w/ magnets. (Tegu)

I mean, you can give someone suggestions if they ask, but that's all they are. People will buy what they want. I totally get your feeling on donating to the Sandy victims, in fact my SIL who lives in an affected town received a print from me where the proceeds went to the red cross. But for a kid? People wan to give them toys b/c they're a kid.

Yea - my situation is a bit more extreme.  The aforementioned toys were basically stocking stuffers (and adding snotty to my self-proclaimed ungrateful), the "rest" would literally fill a small home. ILs have a shopping addiction but are also very one-sided, not doing the same for sibs.  It's really just a crummy situation for a different day in a different post.

Regardless, my post was really meant to be about not understanding/liking the wooden or unknown source toys.  Not what was given/not given.   In spite of how I sound in this post I am grateful for everything my life, maybe just not always my ILs. :)
