Naps - From Swing to Crib

As of now, all of my LO's naps are in his swing during the day. He sleeps fine at night in his crib.

If your LO was like this - when did you transition his naps from the swing to his crib and how did you do?

  • Sorry I have no advice but I just wanted to say that we tried this about 2 weeks ago and failed miserably.... Hope your transition goes better than ours!  I've temporarily given up since the lack of naps was killing both of us!

  • This is us too. He starts daycare in 2 weeks and I was going to try to get him to nap in his crib before that, to make it easier at DC. I tried it once, it failed and I haven't tried it since. He isn't a great napper to begin with, so that is probably part of our problem.

  • (Note: DD still doesn't sleep in her crib due to severe reflux but does sleep in her Rock N Play.)

DD took naps in her swing exclusively until about 1 week ago when she decided she was amenable to taking naps in her Rock N Play. From that point on, she hasn't been in the swing once. She didn't outgrow it (she's tiny because of the reflux) but she can sit up unassisted so she is just over the swing.

Her sleep is definitely more consistent and consolidated than it was at 3m. Things will change a lot as she matures so, personally, I'd just let her sleep in the swing if she'll sleep there most of the time but try the crib once a day. I'd probably choose her 2nd nap of the day just because if DD missed her first nap, the rest of the day was shot and she was getting too tired from the day by nap 3 to attempt anything new.

We started putting her down for fewer naps in the swing around 3m.  All I did was put her in the crib instead of the swing for 1 nap per day, and once that went over well, switched out another swing-for-crib nap.

In other words, we did it gradually over the course of about 2w. It worked out great.

Did your LO need anything to help her sleep? Or did she just fall to sleep in the crib?

I usually swaddle at night and he sleeps great at night but when he sleeps during his naps - he isn't swaddle but he is in his swing and sleeps great.

So maybe I will have to swaddle for naps? I haven't actually tried yet so he might be fine but I wasn't sure when to start trying.

  • Our DS is just now transitioning (at 3 months) from sleeping in the swing (naps *and* nights) to his crib and it is rough going but necessary at this point since I was having to sleep on couch at night to be near him. We started incorporating a white noise machine and humidifier when he was in the swing and just starting putting him in crib w/same white noise and humidifier so that those elements were familiar. Now he started daycare this week too and there's no swing there so I guess you could say that they're helping with the transition. :) granted, he's no longer napping as long but am hoping that after he gets used to his crib, it'll change. You just gotta push through it.  Good luck!
