Babies: 6 - 9 Months

To those who make their own baby food ...

So I have been making lots of different things for lo. I'm using a baby bullet and it came with a "highly suggested" list of foods to buy organic. Yesterday I was moving on to pears and carrots and both made that list so I got organic. Now how many of you follow this or buy organic? I'm wondering just how important it is because I had to go to another store to get these bc the first did not sell and just made me wonder. Thanks for your input

Re: To those who make their own baby food ...

  • I don't and I have also read there are some foods that all are naturally organic but some get labeled organic and you pay more for no reason, unfortunately I forgot why and which ones but I would look into it.

  • I don't buy organic for myself, so baby eats what we eat

  • I do not specifically seek out organic fruits and veggies for LO or ourselves but if I see it and the price is comparable I'll buy organic.

  • Sometimes I do sometimes I don't.  For carrots I buy them frozen in the steam fresh bags.  It makes it so much quicker to make.

  • I try to follow that list as closely as possible. It just makes me feel better!

I buy organic for my LO for everything on the dirty dozen list.

It isn't that much of a price difference and organic is really easy to find around here.  I'd rather have her not get cancer at the age of 29 like I did. (Who knows if pesticides were to blame but they could be, given that I have never bought organic for myself).

Please don't suggest that those who don't buy organic will get cancer.

A friend I met through a cancer support group was a vegan who always bought organic, led a very "green" lifestyle, and had several Ironman titles, yet still lost his battle to cancer 2 years ago (RIP). Just like I had never sunbathed or used a tanning bed yet I got skin cancer. Sometimes life just happens.

To answer OPs question; no I do not buy organic. There are too many questions as to what it truly organic (too many loopholes and advertising can be very misleading). However, my preference is local and in season when possible.

  • We will buy organic if it is readily available while we are at the store.  However, I think the term "organic" gets thrown around by a lot of people who are not familiar with what the USDA even classifies it as.  There are so many loopholes etc in the policy on how to get something "certified" organic, that many times, it is no "better" for you than a regular apple.

I think if you pay close attention to the Dirty Dozen mentioned above, wash your fruit/veggies, take the peels off, you are doing better for your child than the average person who does not make any of their childs food.

  • We go organic with anything on the dirty dozen list and anything that's not, but is priced similarly to the non-organic version. It can be a challenge to find everything I'm looking for at one store in one week, but I get what is available and then check again the next week. Make sure to also look at the frozen produce. Where we live a lot of the organic frozen fruits and veggies are very similar in price to the regular stuff and they work great for purees.
