Hello everyone,
We are expecting a baby girl in March! I like uncommon names. We have liked the name Cozette for years, but with the release of Les Miserables I'm afraid the name Cosette is going to become popular. Or that everyone will think I named her after the character in the book/movie.
By the way, I do like the spelling with a z instead of an s. And I am aware of the "negative connotations" the name has in France or to French people.
Does anyone foresee Cosette/Cozette becoming a popular or trendy name?
Re: Cozette Concerns
I don't think it will be become popular. I would think that you named her after the character from the book.
Cosette its self has been around for centuries, ( the actual book by Victor Hugo was published circa 1860's)there was not an abundance of people being named Cosette when Les Mis came to broadway in 1987, I do not think it will this time around.
Hm, I'm wondering if that will annoy me for the rest of my life or not. Maybe it won't be that big of a deal
Wasn't the name Cosette created for Les Mis? So in that sense, yes, I do associate the name only with the character. I'm not saying that's a dealbreaker--my son is Atticus, which is pretty much the same deal.
I would not spell it with a z--that just looks silly.
ETA: Whoops, I forgot to answer the original question. I doubt it will become popular/trendy.
From what I understand the name Cosette/Cozette was a nickname or pet name for Nicole before Les Miserables was written.
I normally don't like z's because they can come across as harsh sounding, but I rather like it for this name.
By the way, I adore the name Atticus. Even with the unavoidable reference to the book it is a fantastic name. The character Atticus is so admirable in the book (in my opinion) it's almost a bonus!
Thank you for the feedback, I really appreciate it.
Keep 'em coming!

From what I understand, the name existed before the musical was written as a pet name for Nicole.
I understand, and agree, that some spellings can get out of hand and distasteful, but I really don't think that the z is "youneek". I also like the sound of a z instead of a soft s when pronouncing it, so it serves a phonetic purpose.
"As a real given name, Cosette is more probably a variant of Cozette, which is an old pet form of Nicole."

I read this before in a French name book years ago too.
The s in Cosette is pronounced as a hard sound similar to a z when the name is pronounced correctly in French. The z in unnecessary and IMO looks like you misspelled the name. Perhaps it depends on where you live.
I agree with this. I would definitely think you named her after the book/musical and that you misspelled it, whether for phonetic purposes or not. I don't think it will become popular.
Les Mis has been around for a long time. Many stage shows and this is not the first movie. If it didn't get trendy any other time, it probably won't this time.
I say if you like it, use it!
I'm going to predict that Cosette will rise in popularity this year. I don't see it entering the top 50, and probably not the top 100, but I think it will have a quick rise. My reasoning is that parents today are actively looking for pretty and unique names. When the musical came out on Broadway parents weren't as concerned with naming their child a unique name. Today everyone is trying to find a unique name and I think the musical will draw attention to this pretty and unique name.
I also suggest you stick with the correct spelling. I hate Cozette and I hate Corrine - it's Corinne. I see the Corrine spelling here a lot and it makes me gag. I don't understand why people give their children French names if they are going to misspell them.
Exactly this.
Is Navaeh?
Aw, thank you! We like the association with the character, too
I would absolutely assume you named her after the Les Mis character. And I also strongly encourage you to not misspell it by putting in a 'z'.
That said, I like the name Cosette a lot and don't think it will become too popular.
I wonder if there are any babies out there named Javert...
I've always loved the name Cosette because of the book but would never actually use it except for a pet since there are so many other names out there to use. So, no, I don't think it will become popular. And you'll never have any worries about Cozette becoming popular since it is a totally different name.
What about Collette?
Three Girls: Bits 2/08 Biscuit 10/09 & Sweet Chuck 2/12
One Favorite son: Suishy Smalls 6/14
And another Princess coming 7/16
Of course this is 100% my personal preference. I don't judge anyone else for naming their children popular names.
